The very simple cultivation of the plant quickly brought it popularity among fans of decorating their home with live greenery. Shoots persistently creep along the walls or hang down from hanging pots, not requiring much attention to themselves
Rod Tradescantia
Several dozen species of herbaceous perennials combined botanists into a genus
Tradescantia (Tradescantia).
On long, erect or drooping stems of the plant, oval leaves without petioles sit in a regular order. They can be of different colors; smooth or downy; simple or succulent.
Picturesque leaves are complemented by graceful small three-membered flowers of different shades.
Seed pods are formed in place of pollinated flowers.
Tradescantia, perhaps, is the leader in the occupied square meters of living space among indoor plants.
Popular varieties
* Tradescantia white-flowered (Tradescantia albiflora) - the simplest Tradescantia with small pointed leaves growing up to 4 cm. The green surface of the leaves is sometimes decorated with golden yellow or white stripes. White small flowers live only one day. This species is most often found in residential and office buildings.
* Riverside Tradescantia (Tradescantia fluminensis) - differs from the above-described species in longer leaves of an oval-elliptical shape. There are varieties with silvery stripes on the leaf surface.
* Tradescantia Blossfeld (Tradescantia blossfeldiana) - differs in long pubescent succulent elliptical leaves. Different sides of the sheet are colored differently. The top of the leaf is olive green, and the underside is lilac. In the tone of the leaves and flowers, they have several color shades: pink-purple color is diluted with a white core.
* Virginia Tradescantia (Tradescantia virginiana) - its erect stems with narrow dark green leaves grow well in open field. Bright blue flowers bloom all summer. Bred varieties with flowers of white, blue, pink, purple tones.
* Tradescantia navicular (Tradescantia navicularis) - a species with succulent succulent leaves shaped like a boat. On a juicy succulent stem, short leaves are closely pressed together, creating the illusion of a seaport in which too many boat-shaped vessels have accumulated. The plant is easy to care for, but it is afraid of the cold. Therefore, in winter, it is necessary to select a warmer place for it.
Growing
The variety of species allows the use of Tradescantia both in the open field (resistant Tradescantia virginiana) and as a houseplant. The most advantageous sight is obtained when growing a plant in hanging containers, when the stems, covered with picturesque variegated leaves, flow in elegant streams to the floor surface.
The open sun is contraindicated for all Tradescantia, therefore, the containers are placed in the room, not focusing on the windows, and in the open ground they select a place in the shade for the plant. Garden species tolerate high and low temperatures, and indoor species have a lower limit equal to plus 10 degrees.
Tradescantia are big lovers of moisture, so watering should be regular. So that the water does not stagnate, the soil in the planting tank must be loose, water-permeable. Although plants are not whimsical to soils, in order to ensure easy movement of moisture, they prepare a mixture of peat soil with sand, adding complex fertilizer when planting. Twice a month, during the period of active growth, watering is combined with top dressing, adding liquid fertilizer to the irrigation water. Feeding with phosphorus-potassium fertilizer will help the variegated leaves to be more picturesque and brighter.
The plant loves frequent spraying of the leaves with warm water.
Reproduction
The plant is very unpretentious and easily propagates by cuttings at any time of the year.
Enemies
Mealybugs and green apple aphids are not averse to profit from the delicate green leaves.
