Another representative of the tropics, which does not suit any other climate, and therefore in the rest of the world, Alokazia is grown as a houseplant. Of course, indoors, the plant cannot show all its power, and often the growing process never reaches the moment of flowering, but its picturesque leaves are worth it for Alokazia to settle in your home
Rod Alokazia
Seven dozen species of rhizome herbaceous evergreen perennials were united by naturalists in the genus
Alocasia (Alocasia).
Plants of the genus are patriots of the tropics, and therefore in other climatic zones they refuse to grow in open ground, agreeing only to be a room culture.
They do not often give their flowering, living in "captivity", but sometimes, after three or four years, they can make the grower happy.
But Alokazia is popular not because of the flowers, but thanks to the surprisingly decorative large leaves, which sometimes have a fantastic shape. For example, the leaves of Alokazia amazon resemble the wings of pterosaurs - flying dinosaurs of the Jurassic period of the Earth's life. It seems that pterodactyls and rhamphorhynchs, before leaving the terrestrial expanses, passed their wings to Alokazia in order to remind the future inhabitants of the planet about themselves hundreds of millions of years later.
Varieties
* Indian alocasia (Alocasia indica) is a herbaceous plant with a long cylindrical caudex (what is “caudex”, see here: https://www.asienda.ru/komnatnye-rasteniya/osobyj-stebel-yatrofy/). Many plants, which we have already discussed, are supplied with Caudex. These are: Adenium, Bocarnea (or Nolina), Pachypodium, Ficus, Jatropha and even the annoying dandelion.
Large leaves, growing up to 1 meter in length, are triangular-arrow-shaped, almost reaching heart-shaped. There are varieties whose green leaves have a metallic hue. The leaves are arranged on strong erect petioles.
* Alocasia Lowe (Alocasia lowii) - in comparison with its giant relatives, this species seems to be a dwarf, growing to a height of 60 cm. The olive-green leaves of a triangular shape are leathery to the touch.
* Alocasia Sander (Alocasia sanderiana) - differs in thick glossy leaves with a dark green with a metallic sheen top and a silvery-purple leaf back. The leaf has an irregular shape with a wavy edge, highlighted by a white border. White veins, clearly visible on the surface of the leaf, give it a special picturesqueness.
* Alokazia amazonian (Alocasia x amazonica) is a hybrid child of Alocasia Sander and Alocasia Low, growing up to 2 meters. On dark green leaves, similar to the wings of pterosaurs, silvery-white veins stand out as a skeleton.
* Large-rooted alocasia (Alocasia macrorhiza) is a herb that is surprising in its size. One leaf of Alokazia krupnokornevaya can easily replace an umbrella for a couple in love, taken by surprise by a tropical downpour on a walk.
Although the plant has a small amount of milky sap, in the countries of East Asia, its stems are used for food. And gardeners plant such a bush next to the compost heap so that it does not irritate the guests' eyes. Interestingly, this species of Alokazia prefers to grow closer to human habitation, and not hide in the wild tropical jungle.
Growing
A naturally light-loving plant will not rebel in the shade. The main thing for Alokazia is high (up to 85 percent) environmental humidity and a temperature of at least 17 degrees.
Potting soil is prepared by mixing 3 parts of humus with turf soil, peat and sand, taken in 2 parts each. For greater looseness, pieces of charcoal or moss are added to them. Every 2 weeks in the spring-summer period, liquid fertilizer is added to the water for irrigation.
Reproduction
Types such as sowing seeds are suitable; division of the rhizome; offspring.
Enemies
In low air humidity, mite infestation is possible.
