Clematis care

Correctly planting liana-shrubs is very important for the further growth of clematis. But, if you do not provide decent care for the shoots that rush closer to the sun, it means to nullify all your efforts when planting

We select a support for shoots

Rather, we choose the support even before landing. We decide what will serve as a support for our tenacious shoots growing by leaps and bounds.

If we are going to decorate the wall of the house with clematis, we drive hooks into it, on which we strengthen the wire. From the wire, you can "draw" a picture on the wall. Clematis leaves and flowers will very quickly cover the support, and on the wall we will get a purple-green pattern, which we drew with a wire.

When planting creepers at the pergola, around the gazebo, near the porch, she herself will climb up its carved elements, we will only help her a little with the choice of the path, directing the shoots in the right direction.

Enemies of Clematis

Unfortunately, any living creature has not only friends, but also plenty of enemies.

* Covering plant shoots for the winter, protect them from vole mice and rats, which can completely destroy your nutritious shoots. Spread out the tubes, inside which place the bags of poison bait for uninvited guests.

* Likes to feast on the roots of clematis and an insect with a cute name "bear", digging deep holes in the ground. Medvedka loves the same well-manured and moist soils as many flowering plants of summer cottages, including clematis. One of the ways to deal with it is to deeply dig the soil, which interferes with the moves of the bear, blocking her path to delicacies.

* Microscopic fungi that have penetrated the wounds and cracks at the base of the shoots provoke a dangerous plant disease called "wilt". If the disease struck clematis, you will have to remove and burn the damaged shoots, and spill the soil with a solution of foundationol for a few springs and autumn. The drug foundazol has prophylactic and medicinal properties, is used in almost all countries, and works in any climate.

* The enemies of clematis include: rust, gray rot, powdery mildew. So that a pleasant summer vacation is not overshadowed by the invasion of pests, you just need to provide the plants with good agricultural technology.

Seasonal vine care schedule

Spring

To feed the clematis shoots weakened by frost, spill the soil with milk of lime (stir two hundred grams of lime in ten liters of water and spill one square meter of soil). After abundant watering, we feed the roots with mineral fertilizer or fermented cow dung diluted with water in a ratio of one to ten. We will strengthen the result of soil loosening by mulching, using humus, peat, sawdust, depending on what we have available and what the soil requires so as not to worsen its acid balance.

The first time, while the shoots are elastic and obedient, we direct them in the direction we need. In places where it is necessary to fasten them, we carefully tie the lashes. We carry out regulatory pruning to stretch the flowering area. Having missed the moment, we will allow the vine to curl at its own whim, which will complicate the further care of the unthinkable weaves of shoots.

Summer

Do not forget to water the liana abundantly, while protecting the leaves and the center of the bush from water, spill water under the root of the plant.

Once a month we water clematis with a weak solution of boric acid and potassium permanganate. We spray the bushes with a urea solution prepared from the calculation: half a tablespoon (do not use the spoon from which we eat ourselves) to a ten-liter bucket of water.

We enhance soil mulching by planting low-growing annual flowers around clematis.

We carry out regulatory pruning of shoots.

Autumn

The main task of autumn is to properly cut the shoots. The criterion for the size of the shortening is the flowering period of clematis. The lianas that form flowers on the shoots of the current season are cut to ground level or to a real leaf (varieties of the Jacqueman group, Vititsella, Integrifolia).

If flowers are formed both on the shoots of the current season and on last year's (varieties of the Lanuginoza group, Florida, Patens), it is necessary to keep healthy shoots of this year until spring. To do this, we remove the lashes from the supports, clean them of old leaves, cut out dry, broken, weak shoots, and shorten the healthy and strong ones up to one and a half meters. We lay the whips along the garden bed or gently fold it into a ring and put it to the base of the bush.

We insulate neatly laid liana lashes, providing protection measures against insect pests and small rodents. And we are waiting for the arrival of spring to meet again with our beautiful pets.
