In the group of perennial flowers, the lily stands out for its graceful beauty and unpretentiousness. For those who want to plant or transplant lilies in the fall, I offer information on the timing, planting rules and advice on care
When to plant
Lilies grow without transplanting for 4-5 years, Asian hybrids - 12. During this time, the bulbs give tall stems, full-fledged buds, do not lose varietal qualities. Upon the expiration of the specified time frame, an excavation is required. If you do not follow these recommendations, the plant is depleted, a large number of children grow, the bulb becomes smaller, and is affected by diseases.
Lilies are planted in the spring, after the snow melts, or in the fall. The second option is considered the best:
• the bulb is at rest and full of energy;
• there is no danger of damaging the sprout;
• by spring the bulb will take root and will be immune to spring frosts;
• vegetation starts faster;
• by autumn, more babies appear than during spring planting.
The time to plant the bulbs depends on the variety and your location. In Russia, based on climatic characteristics, lilies are planted for two and a half months. In the middle lane, planting work takes place from mid-September to the end of October. In the Urals, earlier - September, the first week of October, in Siberia, the end of August-September, the southern regions from October to mid-November.
Timing is based on weather conditions. With a steady, long-term warmth, the timing of autumn planting moves forward 1-2 weeks, in a cold autumn they are planted earlier.
The goal of the grower is to avoid rapid growth and emergence of the sprout. It is also impossible to tighten it: the onion must have time to take root before immersion in winter sleep, without the formation of a root system, it will freeze. You can start when the weather is cool, with daytime characteristics within +10.
Many plant lilies at the same time as winter garlic. For autumn plantings, a bulb dug out this year is used.
How to plant
A favorable environment for growth and flowering is a sunny place. There should be no stagnation of melt / rainwater and strong winds. If the groundwater is located close, drainage is done in the flower bed, since the bulb, during growth, deepens, and the roots of some species can go to a depth of 60-70 cm.
Lily does not like clayey, heavy soils; the best option would be sandstone or loam with normal acidity. Candidium and tubular hybrids are especially demanding on normal HP. With high acidity, the bulb does not absorb nutrition, loses its strength and gives full flowering only in the first year.
Before planting, a deep digging is done (40-50 cm) with fertilizers. Per sq / m, 0.5 st. superphosphate, a handful of potassium sulfate. If the soil is heavy, a compost / peat bucket is added. The ideal soil for development and growth is filling the planting pit in layers (see picture).
Germination and flowering depend on the quality of the bulbs. Before planting, consider the lilies, they should be of a dense structure, without damage, mold and rot. Only scanty specimens will bloom, the middle ones will release flower stalks only in the second year, children in the third.
The bulbs are planted dry in the prepared soil. The planting depth must correspond to the grade. Tall species deepen 15-20 cm, medium-sized 12-15, low 10-12. The spacing between plants also advises growth characteristics, the higher the flower, the greater the spacing (see picture).
A furrow or holes are made on the flower bed. If you decide to create layers, then the sand should be located at the immersion level of the bulb and be 2-4 cm, this will save the root from putrefactive infections. If lilies are planted in holes, then the step between them and the rows is kept within 25-30 cm. 3 bulbs are placed in each hole (see picture).
Lily care / h]
For successful wintering, a new flower bed must be covered with spruce branches or sawdust, dry leaves. This is done in November or earlier, before the onset of persistent frosts. In the spring, the shelter is removed, loosening is carried out.
For fungal infections, the bed is watered with phytosporin. It is advisable to repeat the procedure on a monthly basis. Watering is carried out on wet soil, the solution is prepared according to the instructions on the package.
