In many farms, the carrot harvest has already been harvested and sent for storage. But by no means all gardeners after that sit idly by, waiting for the next sowing season. In the fall, it is necessary to prepare the ground for spring planting. And someone can plan and winter crops of this useful root crop
About fertilizers necessary for carrots
Carrots draw out a large amount of nutrients from the ground, so you need to thoroughly prepare the area for crops. According to some estimates, along with each kilogram of harvested root crops, the owner of the site takes out of the soil up to 5 g of potassium, more than 3 g of calcium and nitrogen, and at least 1 g of phosphorus.
Like many other vegetables, carrots absorb different amounts of all these nutrients at each stage of development. At the very beginning of growth, she needs nitrogen, and closer to harvest, she wakes up an appetite for potassium consumption. In other elements, the need for the root crop is relatively uniform. And future beds should be fertilized, focusing on these product features.
Immediately you need to warn that it is better to set aside fresh manure for fertilizing another crop or send it to the production of humus. By bringing it to the beds for carrots in the year of planting, the gardener will receive a vegetable that is not the most attractive-looking. The root crop in the ground will branch out and its market value will be reduced.
On the contrary, matured compost, peat or humus will come in very handy. It must be applied on poor sandy soil types, loams, podzolic soils. This will require about 5 kg per 1 square meter. area. These works are carried out under the autumn digging of the soil.
You can add mineral fertilizers to organics. For this you will need:
• ammonium nitrate - up to 20 g;
• superphosphate - not less than 30 g;
• potassium chloride - about 30 g.
It is useful to add clean wood ash to the soil. It has a positive effect both for spring planting and for winter crops. Raw material consumption is approximately 150 g per 1 sq. M. area. This portion must be divided so that two-thirds are applied to the site during digging, and the rest of the fertilizer is in the process of raking the beds with a rake just before sowing.
Features of winter sowing
Carrots are highly cold-resistant, however, if the sowing time is incorrect, this quality can lead to the death of seedlings. Seeds can germinate at temperatures from + 3 ° C. In case of stable weather and fluctuations of the thermometer in the range of + 3 … + 5 ° C, shoots can be noticed in the beds after three weeks. And if the temperature in the fall after sowing rises above these values, the germination process will accelerate. And with the arrival of frost, tender greens will simply die. Therefore, podzimny sowing should be carried out in late autumn - before the onset of persistent hard frosts. In this case, the seeds will leave in the winter without hatching, and will sprout only with the arrival of spring. With such a sowing time, the first crop will be obtained two weeks earlier than from seeds planted in the ground in spring.
The seeding rate in autumn differs from the amount of seed used in spring. If in the spring you need about 1-3 g per 1 sq. beds (depending on the germination of seeds), then taking into account the weather conditions of winter plantings, this bar is increased by 20-30%. When sowing, you also need to consider the type of soil in your area. On heavy soil, the sowing depth is made about 2 cm, on light soil - at least 3 cm.
Early production of carrots can also be obtained by sowing seeds in the last decade of February in protected ground. If you have not yet acquired greenhouses or greenhouses, you can use portable film shelters, build simple tunnels.
