The onion itself seems to be an inconspicuous and low-nutritional vegetable. But, at the same time, his absence from the house is very strongly felt. Soups, marinades, salads without onions lose their special taste and pungency. In addition, it has invaluable healing qualities, strengthens the body with vitamins and other essential elements. In order for onions to always be in abundance, it is very important at the beginning of summer to pay attention to the beds with the planted vegetable
Onion
In June, fertilization and watering are the priority measures to be taken for onions. Onions that were sown directly into the ground or propagated by seedlings are fed this month with ammonium nitrate.
Those who are engaged in growing onions from sets know that these days, when bulbs are formed and the vegetable is gaining weight, the plant is extremely demanding on water. Therefore, in June, onion beds are generously watered.
In June, the flaws of inexperienced gardeners are clearly visible, who planted the sevok too shallowly. When loosening the soil or aligning the beds with a rake, such sets are easily turned out of the ground. Therefore, it is necessary that the sevok be covered with a layer of earth of at least 1 cm. In addition, with a shallow planting, the bottom of the bulb is located in the upper layer of soil, which dries out faster. Since, due to the peculiarities of its botanical structure, the root system of the bulb is poorly developed, rooting slows down with such planting errors, and the vegetable's need for moisture is not fully satisfied.
Therefore, watering is especially important during this period. Irrigation is carried out even during short periods of drought. In the future, as the onion develops, it will need less watering. And in preparation for harvesting, ripening occurs practically with a moisture deficit.
Growing onions for greens
In the summer, we have the opportunity to free our window sills from indoor beds with greenery in order to grow it in the open field. One of the best contenders for these purposes is the batun onion. It forms a small bulb and is mainly grown for abundant greenery. This type of onion is highly branched. Such a perennial plant in the first year after sowing forms a bush of 3-4 plants. Roots, bottom and buds overwinter in the ground. They wake up in early spring and will be the source of the first greenery from their own garden. And by the fall of the second year, you will get a powerfully developed bush, in which there are from 16 to 20 plants.
Batun is cultivated both as a perennial and as a biennial and annual plant:
• One-year-old tramp is sown in early spring in order to harvest the harvest in autumn by continuous digging of plants. In June, seedlings from greenhouses and greenhouses are transferred to a permanent place in open ground.
• A two-year crop is sown in June-July. The harvest of greenery will ripen the next year in the second half of May.
• To cultivate perennial batun, sowing seeds is performed closer to the middle of summer. A year later, the crop is harvested in stages, cutting off the leaves in several stages. It is most correct to do the first cut in May, and the next, depending on the growth rate of the greenery, in June-July.
It is convenient to make a bed for a batun about 1 m wide, sowing is performed in 3-4 rows.
Another valuable vegetable in our beds is leeks. Leek is grown for the sake of its cylindrical bulb - an edible false stem. But while this part is still far from the stage of ripeness - it ripens closer to August - young leaves of the plant are also used for food, which are excellent for salads.
Summer care for this onion consists in weeding, watering and loosening the soil, applying fertilizers. In June, plantings are fed with ammonium nitrate. Short-stemmed varieties need to be hilled. This technique helps whiten the stem. Also this month, you can continue to sow leeks on sites that have been freed from early vegetables.
