The unusual lily Martagon has become increasingly common in the gardens of amateur flower growers. The development of new varieties expands the range of this beautiful flower in the common people called Tsar's curls

Characteristic

Plant height ranges from 60 cm to 2 m. The powerful stem carries 20-40 medium-sized inflorescences. Modern Martagon varieties have different colors. Pink, white, inky, deep orange petals curl up beautifully, like curls. The presence of dark spots is a must-see feature of this type of lily.

The whorled arrangement of elongated oval leaves is a characteristic feature of Martagon. Dark green leaf plates are arranged in several tiers.

The underground part is represented by a bulb formed by many layers of scales.

Without a transplant, it can grow in one place for up to 20 years. It is a long-liver, does not lose its decorative properties up to 60 years.

In the wild, it is found in Korea, Australia, Europe. The first specimens found had exceptionally white petals. Through hybridization, the color gamut has increased significantly.

This type of lily is characterized by increased frost resistance. Does not require shelter for the winter. Prefers loamy soils with a neutral reaction of the environment. Does not tolerate the close occurrence of groundwater and flooded areas.

Loves scattered partial shade. Protecting small shrubs from direct sunlight promotes the development of tall stems with larger inflorescences. In open places, the flowers become smaller, the size of the plants decreases.

Lily is practically not damaged by pests and diseases.

Landing

At the beginning of September, a hole is dug 40 cm deep, half covered with fertile soil mixed with sand, peat, leaf litter. The acidity is brought to neutral with dolomite flour or by adding crushed eggshells.

Then a 3 cm sand cushion is created for better air exchange. The bulbs are placed at the corners of the fossa at a depth of 20 cm with a distance of 25 cm from each other. Buried in the remaining fertile soil. Compaction and spilling of soil.

In the store, lilies go on sale in early spring. They must be preserved until autumn planting. To do this, each copy is wrapped in a newspaper, placed in the lower drawer of the refrigerator. The recommended storage temperature is 2 to 8 degrees. If this is not possible, then they are planted in the ground, having previously marked the planting site with sticks. Such plants will not bloom this year.

In April, after the snow melts, the first shoots appear. It is advisable to temporarily shelter them from recurrent frosts. For protection, cut plastic bottles or a small piece of film stretched over arcs are used. Old buckets without a bottom will do. The stems are so strong that no garters are required.

The first buds appear in mid-June. Gradually opening up, they form a bush with many beautiful curls. Long stamens with a pistil protrude far beyond the petals, attracting pollinators, creating a magical picture. The lily is in this state until mid-July.

Care

All summer, they maintain the soil near Martagon in a loose state. For better air exchange, mulching is carried out with humus, old sawdust, leaf litter.

Watering is regular, as the soil dries up in small doses. Timely weed control. Top dressing begins to be applied 2-3 years after transplanting with complex fertilizers Kemira Lux, Zdraven, nitroammofosk at the rate of 1 level tablespoon per bucket of water.

Do not overuse pure nitrogen fertilizers. They can lead to stretching of the stems, an increase in leaf mass to the detriment of flowering.

The first feeding is given during germination in early spring, the second - during the period of bud formation. The third portion consists of phosphate-potassium fertilizers. It is introduced after the end of flowering. It helps the bulb to prepare for wintering, to stock up on all the necessary substances.

In mid-July, dried stalks are cut off, leaving stems with leaves for further nutrition. In the fall, the remainder is removed completely at ground level.

Planting and caring for Martagon is almost the same as for other types of lilies. In the next article, we will look at ways to reproduce this beautiful flower.
