It is difficult to imagine a flower bed without bright petunia flowers. These plants are often used in ampel compositions, they are used to decorate windows and balconies. Step 1. Feeding petunias
When petunias are planted in the ground, it is recommended to feed them with organic fertilizers, but in July such feeding will inhibit flowering. Other feeding will be required here. In June, the plants took a large amount of minerals from the soil. This means that in July we need to feed our plants at least twice. For this, a urea solution is suitable at the rate of 1 g per 1 liter of water. Petunia will begin to bloom more luxuriantly.
In order to protect plants from powdery mildew, you can spray petunias with a 1% potassium phosphate solution. It is important to remember that flowers in pots need more frequent feeding. Shop formulations that include potassium nitrate are also suitable.
Yellowed leaves will tell you that the plants need iron. These are signs of chlorosis. Such a disease can completely destroy petunias. An urgent need to water the bushes with a nutrient solution: 8 g of ferrous sulfate and 5 g of citric acid should be diluted in 2 liters of water. The soil should be watered so that the solution does not burn the leaves.
To prevent the disease, every week you need to water the flowers with acidified water (dilute a small amount of citric acid in 1 liter of water, at the tip of a knife). If you notice a lack of iron in your flowers, then you can use a store-bought preparation such as Feroviton (diluted according to the instructions) and process it at least 4 times with an interval of 5 days.
Step 2. Remove faded buds
Florists know that in place of the faded buds, the plant forms seed pods. This process takes a lot of strength from the bushes, and the flowering slows down. The conclusion from this is this: regularly remove wilted flowers.
This should be done carefully, with sharp scissors, so as not to injure the stems. Such a procedure will cause a new wave of abundant flowering. Several flowers can be left until seeds form. But it is not a fact that the plants grown from these seeds will have all the characteristics of the mother flowers.
Step 3. Pruning petunias
In the middle of summer, petunias grow very large, the stems are significantly lengthened, which leads to a decrease in the size and number of flowers. It is in our power to give impetus to a new wave of flowering. Cardinal plant pruning will help.
With a pair of pruning shears, which are pre-disinfected, you need to cut off the shoots by about a third. Ampel plants can be cut even by half. After pruning, you need to feed the petunia so that flowering resumes. Once the bushes are full of new buds, finish the pruning and enjoy the vibrant, lush plants.
To prevent your petunia from growing up, it must be pinched at a young age (in the phase of 5-6 leaves), then it begins to form lateral shoots and grow in width. This will allow fewer plants to be used in flower gardens.
If you prune without feeding, the new shoots will be thin and weak, they will break easily from a gust of wind, and you will not get the desired result.
Step 4. Watering petunias
These decorative flowers are very fond of regular, abundant watering. In the middle of summer, when the warmest days come, the petunia should be watered 2 times a day. It is advisable to spray with a sprayer every 5 days in the evening. Then your flowers will always have a fresh look.
Plants in pots or containers are watered once a day to avoid stagnation of excess moisture. Although petunias tolerate an excess of water well, still protect the plant roots from decay.
Step 5. Make sure that other plants do not shade the petunias
Petunias bloom well and profusely in the presence of sufficient light. Therefore, create flower arrangements in flower beds in such a way that other plants do not shade the petunia.
If neighboring flowers begin to overtake her in growth, be sure to tie them up or shorten them. Ampel compositions should be placed in places where plants will be protected from wind and drafts, so that long flowering shoots do not break and flowers do not fly around.
Step 6. Protecting petunias from pests and diseases
Petunias are susceptible to the same diseases as other plants. It can be powdery mildew and gray rot. Insects such as aphids or spider mites can also cause irreparable harm to plants.
Treat your colors very carefully - review daily and take emergency measures in case of defeat. Insecticides, which can be bought at any garden store from parasitic insects, will help. And if you observe the watering regime and promptly remove the withering leaves and flowers, you will not be afraid of rot.
Spider mites most often attack during drought periods, so regular watering will also be a preventive measure for it. Well, the top dressing, which was mentioned earlier, will make the plants more resistant to diseases.
