We often use Chinese cabbage for salads. This juicy vegetable is loved by many. How to grow it in your garden? There is an opinion that cabbage is planted in the spring, and in the summer it will go to the arrow. Let's try to prove the opposite

Why plant cabbage in July

There are two reasons for this.

First reason is that lettuce is sensitive to light. The longer the daylight hours, the faster the arrows form. The longest days are in June, which is why it is not recommended to plant cabbage this month, but July and August are very suitable for this.

The second reason - preservation for the winter. If the cabbage was planted early, then it will not remain fresh until winter. For these purposes, choose mid-season varieties and seeds marked for storage.

The conclusion suggests itself the following - we plant Chinese cabbage in April and July. The first will delight us with fresh salads, and the second harvest can be prepared.

We grow Chinese cabbage seedlings

First, let's list the advantages:

1. We get the harvest, on average, in 25 days.

2. The root system hardly suffers during transplantation

3. Rational placement of cabbage in the garden.

Preparing containers for seedlings. To do this, we disinfect them with potassium permanganate. It is also better to disinfect universal soil, for this you can simply spill it with boiling water or a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

We sow 3 seeds in each pot, and after the emergence of shoots, we remove 2 weak shoots.

After 2-3 leaves appear, it is advisable to place the seedlings in a cooler place. This will allow her to harden, not to stretch, but to get stronger.

After 3 weeks, the seedlings can be planted on a prepared bed at a distance of at least 30 cm, so that there is room for the growing lower leaves. Reducing the distance between plants results in smaller heads of cabbage.

How to prepare a garden bed

Peking cabbage grows well in sunny areas and light soils. Of course, cruciferous plants should not have previously grown in this place. It is better if green manure plants were planted here earlier.

After digging, it is advisable to disinfect the soil in the same way, then add organic fertilizers, a small amount of ash and again thoroughly dig everything up.

You can enrich the soil with mineral fertilizers if you have not thought about preparing a bed for cabbage in the fall: a tablespoon of superphosphate and ammonium nitrate per square meter of a bed will be enough.

Growing Chinese cabbage by seeds

Chinese cabbage can be grown directly from seed in July, as there is no danger of frost.

The garden bed is prepared in the same way as for seedlings. The seeds are buried to 2 cm, added dropwise and spilled well. As well as for seedlings, up to 3 seeds are placed in each hole, in order to leave the strongest sprout later. The seeds do not need to be soaked in advance, they will germinate well anyway.

Outdoor care for Chinese cabbage

Peking cabbage has very shallow roots, it cannot take moisture from the deep layers, so the soil should not dry out. Watering should be carried out evenly, otherwise the heads of cabbage will crack. At the same time, excessive watering can lead to putrefactive diseases, which will not allow the heads of cabbage to develop properly. Soil moisture is best maintained around 65 percent

Every 10 days, cabbage needs to be spud

During the growing season, seedlings can be fed. An infusion of mullein is suitable at the rate of 100 ml per liter of water. It is advisable to carry out this procedure 2 times with an interval of 2 weeks. And when the heads of cabbage are formed, spray the cabbage leaves with a solution of 2 g of boric acid in 10 liters of water.

It should be remembered that an excess of nitrogen fertilizers does not contribute to the preservation of cabbage for the winter!

And it is very important to protect cabbage from pests. To do this, inspect the cabbage leaves every day, remove the clutches of the cabbage butterfly, dust the seedlings with ash or mustard powder. You can plant garlic nearby.

The most suitable varieties for planting in July are Victoria, Nika F1 and Autumn Jade, which ripen on average 50 days.
