Shade-loving flowering plants

Almost each of us on the site has shaded "islets", and sometimes quite large areas. Most often, nothing grows on them, and if it does, then the plants do not look very good. What to do?

Plant shade-loving flowers on such plots of land that will grow and bloom well in such conditions. Let's take a closer look at what kind of flowers can and should be planted in the shade?

Kupena multi-flowered (Solomon's seal)

This flower belongs to the lily family. Outwardly, its leaves and flowers are somewhat reminiscent of a lily of the valley. Kupena grows well on any, even poor soil, but loves fertile land very much and does not like the sun. Of course, it will grow in a sunny place, but it will be much worse than in the shade and it will bloom less effectively, therefore, a place under the trees where other flowers do not want to grow is considered optimal for it. Kupena loves when groundwater is near the surface, loves wet areas, but at the same time does not tolerate stagnant water, from this she can die. Consider all of the above when choosing a place for a flower bed. Kupena blooms, depending on weather conditions, from mid-April to late May, flowering duration is 30-35 days.

Before planting, drainage should be done in the hole by sprinkling small pebbles on the bottom, then a little sand and soil mixed with peat on top. Place a sprout in the hole and cover with a mixture of soil, peat and compost.

This plant propagates by segments of rhizomes, the optimal time is the end of summer. Gardeners often do not risk propagating seeds for several reasons: firstly, the plant can lose its maternal characteristics, and secondly, the seeds germinate for a very long time, if planted in autumn, then the seedlings can only wait in spring, and sometimes even after a year, and thirdly, the plants planted in this way begin to bloom already in the third or fifth year of life. That is, when planting seeds, efforts are expended, but whether there will be a return is unknown.

Caring for the Solomon Seal is easy, the most important thing is to water during dry periods and mulch so that a crust does not form on the soil surface. The kupena does not like loosening, since its roots are close to the surface and it is very easy to damage them by such an operation. Once a year (if the soil is poor, then 2-3 times a year), it is advisable to fertilize with mineral fertilizers and add a little compost or peat to the soil.

Astilba

Another beauty who prefers to hide in the shade is astilba. Amazingly beautiful, with lush clusters of inflorescences and carved openwork leaves, the plant amazes the imagination with a variety of peduncle colors and a height from 40 centimeters to 2 meters. Among such a variety, any gardener will be able to choose what will look best on his site. The plant is especially valuable because it loves shade and survives in areas with groundwater close to the surface. Astilba blooms from June to May.

The plant propagates by renewal buds, dividing the bush and, less often, by seeds. It is best to divide the bush in early spring, then by autumn your bush will delight you with the first flowering. By buds of renewal, reproduction occurs in the spring during the period of emergence of shoots (they are called buds of renewal). The shoot is cut off with a part of the root and planted in a new place.

Caring for the plant is simple, the most important thing is timely watering, it is not recommended to allow the soil to dry out even for a very short time, as this will greatly spoil the appearance of the bush. Once a year, it is advisable to feed with complex fertilizers.

Please note that astilbe tolerates winter frosts well, it is already adapted to our climate, but spring unstable weather with frosts can destroy the plant, so cover astilba with spruce branches or any other covering material at night and on cold days so that it does not die …
