In December, that magical moment comes when a colorful New Year tree begins to flaunt in our houses and apartments to the delight of the whole family. True, other conifers are also called a Christmas tree on these holidays. And why not get such a tree in the yard so as not to chop down the plant every next year, and together with it, celebrate the arrival of a new one? Moreover, the role of a New Year tree can be successfully performed not only by the majestic and solemn blue spruce, but also by such a seemingly exotic representative of conifers like a cedar pine
Cedar pine - for beauty and health
Cedar pine has high adaptive properties. Thanks to this, it can be found in many parts of the world. In addition to its decorative appearance and the ability to use the tree in traditional New Year's festivities, cedar pine is valuable for its nutritious seeds - pine nuts. The seeds of the Siberian cedar pine are used for food, which have a high energy potential: the core contains about 60% fat, as well as about 15% carbohydrates and proteins.
It is also helpful to just sit next to a tree. It is enough to read a book near its branches for about an hour or take time to do other things to notice how your health has improved, and breathing has also become easier. It is not for nothing that cedar needles are used to treat bronchial asthma.
By the way, cedar pine becomes a raw material for different types of oils: essential oils from needles and culinary oils from seeds. Among other things, the so-called cedar milk is made from nuts. To do this, the nucleoli are crushed to a homogeneous mass, diluted with water and brought to a boil on the stove.
Conditions for growing cedar pine
In order for the cedar to develop well and turn into a strong tree as quickly as possible, it needs a high moisture content of the soil and air. The optimal conditions for it are peat bogs and swampy soils. However, it will grow well both on sandy soil types and on nutrient-rich loams. It is important that the soil contains colonies of mycorrhiza - a special beneficial fungal flora.
It should be borne in mind that cedar pine belongs to monoecious plants. Male flowers are a kind of spikelets, and female flowers are inflorescences in the form of cones. The flowering period falls in late spring - early summer. It will be possible to get seeds only after almost a year and a half from the moment of fertilization of the cone. After pollination, it leaves for the winter, and only a year later begins to actively grow in order to ripen by September.
Reproduction of cedar in your personal plot
Reproduction of cedar pine is carried out by sowing stratified seeds. The grooves are arranged with a depth of about 5 cm. At the same time, a little mycorrhizal soil should be poured into them from under an adult cedar - about 100 g for a furrow length of 1 m.
You need to be prepared for the fact that the cedar grows very slowly. For the seedlings to become full-fledged seedlings and be transplanted from the nursery to a permanent place, it will take at least 3 years. Fruiting will begin after another two decades. But you can speed up this process if you make a graft on a 5-year-old Scots pine stock. The stalk is taken from a century-old cedar. It should be healthy and fruitful.
Cuttings are harvested in two terms:
• in February, cut off last year's shoots - they are planted with seedlings with the beginning of the period of sap flow;
• in the second half of summer - annual shoots of this year, they are used for grafting immediately.
When the seedlings are planted in a permanent place, it is recommended to plan the placement of trees so that there are plants grafted by cuttings from different trees nearby.
