If with the arrival of spring and summer, the responsibility for replenishing useful microelements in our body falls on fresh greens, salads from raw cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes, then in late autumn and winter, root crops become a source of vitamins to a greater extent - carrots, beets, celery. And now we need to make sure that the harvest of these breadwinners turns out to be great

How are things in the beds?

Someone has already managed to sow carrots, beets, parsnips, skorcena, parsley in March. It is possible to continue this work with early varieties in April. And on the beds with the emerging shoots of March crops, they carefully loosen the row-spacings, pull out the weeds that have risen from the ground.

Also, if necessary, it is necessary to thin out the seedlings of garden crops so that there is a distance of about 5 cm between them in a row. This work is easier after rain or the next moistening of the beds by watering.

Carrots and celery - what should not be forgotten?

Some gardeners practice winter sowing of carrots. In this case, the beds are covered. And it is important not to forget to remove the film cover in April. Those who prefer spring crops, but have not yet done them, need to hurry up. In the second or third decade of the month, it is the turn of sowing late varieties, the harvest of which ripens in autumn.

Celery, "quartered" in the greenhouse, could be dived back in March. If a pair of true leaves has not yet formed by that time, such work is carried out in April. In a nursery, the distance between seedlings should be 5 cm in a row. Row spacings should also be at least as wide.

In April, planting of celery in greenhouses is fed. For these purposes, a fertilizer such as ammonium nitrate is suitable. The microclimate in the shelter should be such that the temperature does not go beyond + 18 … + 20 ° C.

What you need to know about beets

Compared to other root crops, beets are more thermophilic than, for example, the same carrots. In contrast, beet seeds begin to germinate at temperatures from + 8 ° C. It is even better if the soil warms up to + 10 ° C, otherwise, instead of the expected results, the vegetable will begin to shoot. Sowing of this culture is also in no hurry because the seedlings are very sensitive to the deterioration of the weather, and spring frosts can seriously harm them.

If you are a lover of not only root crops, but also early greens from beets, then sowing can begin from the second decade of April. Then it will be possible to harvest a good harvest of leaves and petioles. For winter consumption and storage, seeding is performed at a later date.

In addition to heat, at the beginning of their development, beets are also very demanding on soil moisture. Although grown roots can withstand periods of drought better than other vegetables, while they are tied up, the earth should not be allowed to dry out. And since the upper layers of the soil dry out very quickly, while the beets with their tap root system deepen into the lower layers of the soil, experts insist on mulching the beds.

The peculiarity of beets is that they can grow well both on clay soils and on sandy soils. But it also depends on the variety - the beets are raised to the surface or their root crop must sit in the ground. The general requirement is that the soil in this area must be fertile enough.

Sowing beets is performed in the second year after filling the garden with manure. The rate of mineral fertilizers is as follows:

• lime-ammonium nitrate - 0.15 kg;

• superphosphate - 0.2 kg;

• potassium salt - 0.3 kg.

Phosphate and potash are added in the spring if they were not introduced before winter. Calculations based on 10 sq. M. the area of the beds. In the future, you should feed the beets with ammonium nitrate. You can also use an herbal infusion based on nettle.
