I really like to plant different berries in the fall, because before the cold snap they have time to take root, new young roots grow, and in the spring, rare buds and the first berries may even appear. Now is the time to plant gooseberries
Choosing a place
The gooseberry really does not like excessive moisture, including it does not tolerate wetlands and areas with a close occurrence of groundwater, take this into account when choosing a place for planting this shrub. Also, with excessive moisture, gooseberries can easily get sick with fungal diseases. But at the same time, he does not like too dry places, he needs regular watering, since the amount of the future harvest and the growth of new shoots depend on this.
The area allocated for the gooseberry should not be located in the shade, the gooseberry painfully tolerates the lack of light, discards the leaves, stretches upward, the berries become small, ripen unevenly, lose their color, and their taste deteriorates. In addition, the lack of light leads to disease in the bushes.
It is also extremely undesirable to plant gooseberries in the lowlands, since in the spring cold air descends there, which can lead to freezing of leaves and buds.
Soil requirements
Gooseberries grow well on almost any land, with the exception of acidified, waterlogged, poorly moisture-permeable soils. All other soil, with proper fertilization, is great for planting this shrub.
Preparing a place
Before planting, we carefully dig up the "bed", remove all weeds with roots, fertilize the soil well, add up to 70 kilograms of compost per 10 square meters into it. Instead of compost, you can take manure, but always rotted, not fresh!
Landing
For planting, we prepare pits measuring 0.4 meters by 0.4 meters. The distance between adjacent holes in one row should be about one and a half meters, and between rows - two meters, you can leave a little more "passages", up to two and a half meters. It is advisable to add about five kilograms of compost (rotted manure), superphosphate (an approximate amount of 130-140 grams) and a little, about 40-50 grams to each prepared hole. Potassium sulfate.
Now we are preparing the bushes. All seedlings must be strong and healthy. We examine them and, if there are diseased branches, we remove the branches. Then we cut the roots so that they are no longer than twenty centimeters (strong seedlings usually have a well-developed root system up to 30 centimeters), remove all diseased and damaged roots.
Now we start landing. We lower the seedling into the hole horizontally or slightly at an angle, deepening it into the soil 5-6 centimeters deeper than it grew in the nursery. We spread the roots well. Then we fill the hole with soil, carefully compact the soil around the bush. Then we cut the shoots to a height of up to fifteen centimeters and be sure to water at the rate of 2-3 liters per one bush. After watering, we mulch the soil. This will help retain moisture and protect the soil from premature freezing.
Care
Taking care of gooseberry bushes is, in principle, easy. The main thing is to periodically loosen the soil, water it as needed, apply the necessary fertilizers on time, treat diseases and pests, remove weeds, and also carry out sanitary pruning.
Please note that in the first year after planting, you will not need to fertilize the shrub, since sufficient nutrients were introduced before planting. Also, in the first 3-4 years, it will be necessary to form the "crown" of the gooseberry with the help of pruning. After this period, pruning will be needed only in order to remove diseased, damaged branches and prevent strong thickening of the bush.
