To create a gorgeous rose garden is the dream of many summer residents. We offer a step-by-step description of planting roses. Details about the working time and the correct actions with the seedling
Why is it better to plant roses in autumn?
Experienced growers say that autumn is the best time to plant roses. Warm earth, absence of the scorching sun, autumn rains … all this together creates good conditions for the seedling and its root system. The success of the event depends on the speed of survival.
In temperate climates, mid-September is the best time to plant roses. At this time, the soil is moderately warmed up and comfortable for the root system. If you wish, you can postpone the event for one or two weeks. After October 10, roses are not planted, since they will not have time to take root and will not survive the winter frosts. Saplings, which are planted at the right time, manage to take root before frost, winter well and actively grow in spring.
By the way, in regions with a warm climate, where the ground does not freeze, you can plant roses from October to April.
Where to plant a rose?
Choosing a place for a rose is a responsible business. Your beauty will grow well, will be in a sunny place, closed from through winds. If your site is located in a lowland and close to groundwater, you need to take into account that plants will be uncomfortable in dampness. Choose the highest point in the landscape and be sure to drain the planting pit.
A good place is the south side, the absence of stagnant water in the ground. It is advisable that there are no trees and shrubs nearby that shade your rose garden at lunchtime. You can select a separate area or arrange plantings next to the house, gazebo, terrace.
If you plan to plant several roses, then you need to arrange them correctly, observing the required interval between them. It depends on the variety: undersized, floribunda - 30-40 cm, hybrid tea, polyanthus 40-60, tall 50-70, park 75-90, standard - 100, curly - 120 and more. Density contributes to the development of diseases, the death of leaves, the elongation of branches, and poor bud formation.
What kind of land do roses love?
The queen of the garden will bloom well in fertile soil, loose and moderately moist. If your site is problematic and clayey, then under the bush there should be exclusively loose earth. The nutrient layer is at least 40 cm.
On depleted soil, prepare the pits for the roses in advance. Pour in noble soil mixture in a couple of weeks. The basis will be compost / humus, rotten manure, diluted with half-dug soil, loam is also suitable for this. Add superphosphate (half a handful) to the bottom layer and mix the granules with the soil. Pour the prepared hole with water and leave to shrink.
Why not plant in freshly dug soil? As you know, the loosened earth becomes compacted over time. In this case, your seedling will be tightened or pushed closer to the surface, while the roots will be exposed, which will negatively affect subsequent development. In winter, high roots can freeze out.
Seedling preparation
A rose grown for potted planting does not require any action. It is only necessary to shed the plant before digging it into the hole, after removing it from the container, straighten the compacted roots, slightly "loosen up" them.
Soak a seedling with open roots overnight (immerse the roots in a bucket of water). Before planting, remove leaves and superficial roots with shears. Dock dry and injured to a healthy place. The stem should be 30 cm - shorten it. If there are kidneys below the vaccination - remove, otherwise wild growth will go. Before planting, spray the bush with iron sulfate (3%), dip the roots in a clay mash.
Advice. Choose a seedling with branched roots and many small filamentous roots. The stem must have at least three intact, developed shoots.
Cooking a pit for a rose
Having marked the distance between the plants, we dig a hole 40 cm wide. On dry sites, the depth is 50 cm, where high-quality drainage is required - 70. At the bottom we pour expanded clay, pebbles or broken brick, on the sandy soil a layer of clay (7 cm). Now we mix part of the prepared earth with superphosphate and fill a third of the hole with it. Add the remaining volume to a glass of ash, mix.
Planting a rose
The soil in the landing hole should have a depression, with a protruding tubercle in the middle. We place the seedling on this hill, observe verticality, straighten the roots and fill it with soil mixture.
At this point, we pay special attention to the root collar, the place of inoculation. Try so that when burying it goes 5 cm underground, for standard, climbing roses - by 10. The event ends with compaction of the earth and watering in several passes. The soil must be saturated with moisture, for this you need to pour out 10-20 liters.
