Moss rose (lat. Rosa moss) Is a flowering plant from the Rosaceae family.
Description
Mossy rose differs from other varieties of roses by the presence of tiny glandular bryophyte greenish-reddish (in once-flowering roses - completely green) outgrowths on pedicels (especially many such outgrowths can be seen on sepals or calyxes). At the same time, these bryophytes emit resinous substances with a rather strong odor (and when you touch such outgrowths, the smell increases noticeably). These outgrowths become especially noticeable after the buds begin to open - this allows them to favorably emphasize the beauty of the already beautiful flowers. By the way, this "moss" is incredibly pleasant to the touch: it is very pliable and surprisingly soft.
The flowers of moss roses are usually of medium size. They boast an incredibly attractive cupped shape and eye-catching thick doubleness, and their color can be either red, pink or white.
Mossy roses were first discovered at the end of the seventeenth century in southern France. In those distant times, they were a kind of emblem of the Victorian era. By the way, it is generally accepted that these beautiful flowers originated from centifolic roses through the selection of kidney mutations.
Popular varieties
Blanche Moreau. These erect and rather dense bushes feel great in partial shade, and white fragrant flowers form bizarre inflorescences, each of which can number up to six flowers, the sepals of which are densely covered with glandular bryophytes.
Capitaine John Ingram. A variety resistant to various diseases, the erect bushes of which are covered with rather large leaves of a gray-green color, and the sepals and shoots are covered with mossy odorous outgrowths. As for the flowers, they are always thick double, colored purple and boast a delicious sweet scent.
Centifolia Muscosa. It looks very impressive even at the stage of green buds. The dense and wide bushes are equipped with lush foliage of light green shades and spectacular drooping shoots, and the pink densely double flowers boast an incredibly attractive and even slightly old-fashioned shape. And the sepals with pedicels are abundantly covered with miniature bryophyte hairs.
Cristata. The unusual sepals of this rose, for which it is famous, are covered with bryophyte glandular hairs - such an unusual structure makes the Cristata roses look like Napoleon's cocked hat. The fragrant flowers of this variety of roses boast a luxurious spherical shape and an intense pink color, pleasant to the eye, and dense flower bushes are covered with large matte leaves and are equipped with numerous straight shoots.
General Kleber. Sepals with pedicels of roses of this variety are densely covered with mossy aromatic outgrowths, and rather large double flowers consist of lilac-pink silk petals. The leaves of General Kleber roses are matte and rather large. And this variety of roses is characterized by a very abundant flowering.
Growing and caring
In terms of winter hardiness and a number of other characteristics, moss roses are as close as possible to centifolic roses. Nevertheless, these beautiful flowers still cannot boast of high endurance, therefore their cultivation is very difficult and laborious. If you want to grow such flowers in the middle zone of Russia, then for the winter they will need to provide an easy shelter.
