Wrinkled rose (lat. Rosa rugosa) Is a flowering plant from the Rosaceae family with surprisingly fragrant flowers.
Description
The wrinkled rose is a shrub reaching one to two meters in height (although sometimes there are five-meter specimens), equipped with bright dark green leaves and incredibly fragrant flowers. The crowns of this rose variety are usually spreading, and the branches are thick and erect. At the same time, annual shoots are always pubescent, clearly herbaceous and greenish, and perennial shoots gradually become woody and acquire a brown color.
There are two whole types of thorns in this rose variety: densely placed needle-shaped small thorns, as well as less densely located large thorns endowed with rather wide and dense bases.
Pointed and serrated-edged oval leaf blades of such a rose boast the presence of prominent folds-veins on the upper sides - this feature is the most real "visiting card" of this type. And the undersides of the leaves are usually pubescent (although sometimes they can be felt) and painted in light gray or grayish-greenish tones. The leaves themselves are odd-pinnate, complex, alternately arranged, with stipules and petioles. Most often, there are seven leaves on one petiole, but sometimes there are nine or five leaves.
Flowers can be either single or located on two or four pedicels covered with small glands. They boast the correct shape, the presence of double perianths and a truly enchanting scent.
With the onset of spring, the wrinkled rose blooms on last year's shoots, and then it continues its flowering already on the shoots of the current year. This type of rose is remontant, that is, it is pollinated by insects, and you can admire its flowering from June to October.
Where grows
The natural habitat of the wrinkled rose is considered to be the coastal eastern zone of Eurasia and the adjacent islands: the coastal zone of the Far East located on Russian territory, the territory of Japan and Sakhalin with Kamchatka, as well as Korea and China (in particular, the Chinese province of Shatung). Most often, this type of rose can be seen in coastal areas or on picturesque sand dunes, and almost always it forms very dense, almost impenetrable huge thickets.
Also, this rose was successfully naturalized in Australia, in the vastness of North America and in a number of European regions. This plant grows safely in man-made parks or gardens, and is also a full member of luxurious natural compositions.
Usage
The wrinkled rose is actively used not only in modern landscape design, but also in hybridization - on its basis, breeders have bred a great variety of hybrids of park roses with fragrant double flowers of pink, white, as well as red and even yellow. And the planting of such a rose is of great value in places of extremely unsafe soil slippage and in areas of ravines or sand scree!
Growing and caring
The wrinkled rose boasts not only fast growth, but also relative unpretentiousness, as well as high resistance to various ailments. Such a rose is able to withstand severe frosts up to minus forty degrees and at the same time does not feel the need for any shelter at all. In addition, it grows well on stony and very poor soils, in drafts and in the immediate vicinity of factories or highways - and everywhere it feels great, blooms luxuriantly and always forms a fairly abundant growth.
As for lighting, this variety of roses is extremely partial to excellent lighting - it is not at all afraid of the direct falling rays of the sun and grows excellently on the sunny side without the slightest harm to flowers or leaves. However, it will feel no worse both in bright light and in partial shade, however, with a shortage of light, less buds will form on such a rose, and this fact should not be discounted either.
