Compared to most other garden flowers, peonies are much more resistant to various diseases. Nevertheless, from time to time, unfortunate misfortunes attack these beautiful flowers. The most common ailments are gray rot, circular mosaic of leaves and, of course, rust. In order to understand exactly how to deal with the next infection, it is important to understand how various diseases manifest themselves on peonies

Phylostictosis

On the leaves of peonies, tiny brownish specks, framed by dark purple rims, first appear. Some time later, they grow and acquire an oblong or rounded shape. And in the very center, the leaves brighten a little and quickly become covered with a huge number of convex dark dots. In the case of a particularly severe lesion, the leaves of the peonies dry out prematurely.

Brown spot

This attack, also called cladosporiosis, manifests itself on peony leaves in the form of brownish specks of fairly large sizes. Growing up, these spots merge and cover the leaves entirely - as a result, they begin to look burnt. And on young shoots, reddish-brownish elongated spots are formed. The stalks of peonies completely darken and almost immediately become covered with smoky mushroom sporulation.

Brown spot

Approximately in June or July, on the leaves of peonies, one can notice bilateral elongated or rounded brownish-brownish specks, framed by darker rims. At first, single spots appear, but after some time they merge with each other. As a rule, the older lower leaves are affected first, and then the ill-fated attack spreads along the stems higher and higher, leading to a gradual drying out of all leaves. Plants, as a result of defeat by brown spot, noticeably weaken, lose their former winter hardiness and bloom very poorly.

Powdery mildew

This ailment attacks peonies on the slope of summer. A sparse cobweb bloom appears on the upper parts of the leaves. Fortunately, powdery mildew is extremely rare on peonies, and it does not cause serious harm to these beautiful flowers.

Rust

Almost immediately after flowering, on the bright peony leaves, you can see numerous yellowish-brownish specks with a slight purple tint. And their backs are covered with mushroom spore pads. These harmful spores are carried by the wind and infect nearby flowers at lightning speed. The malicious attack spreads incredibly quickly - in just a couple of days it can cover absolutely all peony bushes! This happens especially often when the weather is warm and sufficiently humid. The leaves of the affected plants gradually curl up and dry out quickly. Various nutrients cease to accumulate in old roots, and new roots completely stop growing, which in turn negatively affects the formation of buds and their subsequent development. In addition, the risk of damage to weakened peonies by many other ailments significantly increases, including the extremely harmful gray rot.

Circular mosaic of leaves

When affected by this viral disease, yellowish and light green stripes, as well as half rings and rings, can be seen on the leaves between the veins. Such "patterns" greatly reduce the decorativeness of peony bushes, however, their growth and lush flowering remain unchanged. By the way, both infected and healthy shoots often develop on the same bush.

Gray rot

This is the most common and most dangerous ailment. At the bases of the peony stems, a grayish bloom first forms, and after a while the stems darken and, breaking, fall. And on the tips of the peony leaves, you can see blurry brownish specks of rather large sizes. The deformed leaves gradually dry out; and then the same fate awaits the blackened buds. Gray rot is especially rampant in cold and rather damp seasons.
