Don't forget about carrots

Top dressing is very important for any root crop, especially on depleted soils. But the same fertilizers will not work at different stages of vegetable development. The following rules must be remembered about carrots:

• at the initial stage of its development, the plant needs nitrogen fertilization;

• in the process of forming the root crop itself, the beds will need to be fertilized with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

If you save on potash fertilizers, this will not greatly affect the shape and growth of the root crop. However, such dressings are desirable, since they have a positive effect on the taste of the vegetable. In August, it's time to feed the June plantings of carrots with ammonium nitrate. By the way, the same applies to late sowing of beets. It is also necessary to ensure that the carrot heads do not look out of the ground - they begin to turn green and from this acquire a bitter taste. Therefore, do not be lazy once again to huddle the beds.

Broccoli: keep it from blooming

In August, they start harvesting the asparagus cabbage. The heads are cut off selectively, starting from the degree of ripening. But at the time of cutting, it is desirable that the buds are dense, and not open. Cutting is carried out with a sharp knife with a part of the stem. It can be up to 15-20 cm long and is also the edible part of the plant. But the leaves need to be removed.

If the product is not used for cooking in the next two days, it can be frozen. Whole heads look very nice, but it is better to cut the broccoli before sending it to the freezer - this will improve the quality of the freezing process.

Asparagus is beneficial in that the formation of side shoots will continue throughout the summer, and there is no need to re-crops to get a re-harvest. After cutting off the top, the formation of new rosettes in the axils of the leaves will be more active. However, you should be prepared for the fact that the next batch of broccoli will be less.

You need to visit the beds with asparagus more often in hot weather. At this time, the crop is harvested every 2-3 days so that its yellow flowers do not have time to bloom on the broccoli.

Scorzonera - time to sow

Scorchonera sown in spring should remove flowering shoots in a timely manner. If the area permits, you can start preparing the August crops of scorchonera intended for harvesting next fall. The black root, as this root crop is also called, is not afraid of frost and can winter in the ground.

However, scorzonera is demanding on the quality and composition of the soil. It should be moisture-absorbing, rich in humus, with a deep arable layer. On heavy soils, the root crop bifurcates.

It is undesirable to sow black root in areas that have been filled with manure this year. In this place, the scorchonera can be placed only in the second year after other crops. As for the predecessors, carrots, beets and other root crops are not suitable as such.

From mineral fertilizers, the following is introduced into the soil:

• superphosphate - 0.5 kg;

• 40% potassium salt - 0.6 kg.

These rates are calculated for 10 square meters. the total area of the beds occupied by the root crop.

Scorzonera can be cultivated as a 1, 5-year-old culture, and as an annual. In the first case, crops are sown in August, and harvesting is carried out in late autumn of next year. To get a harvest with one-year cultivation, crops are sown in early spring, and root crops are also harvested in autumn.
