Who among the lovers of home gardening will refuse to decorate their suburban areas with peonies? These flowers are recognized as one of the most popular perennials among ornamental plants. Their spectacular appearance, large flowers and pleasant aroma are very favorably combined with relative unpretentiousness and ease of care
Features of growing peonies
Peonies are known for being able to grow in one place for a long time without transplanting. Therefore, if you plan to cultivate them for at least a couple of decades, the choice of a place for a flower bed must be approached very responsibly, taking into account the preferences of the plant.
Herbaceous peonies belong to the category of flowers that need a lot of sunlight to appear before their admirers in all their glory. The maximum compromise you can make is light partial shade when the sun is at its zenith. However, prolonged shading will negatively affect the quality of flowering, and possibly even become the reason for its absence.
Peonies are not recommended to be placed next to trees and houses, not only because they create shade, but also for other important reasons. Peonies compete with other plants for moisture and nutrients in the soil. And in such a duel with trees and shrubs, flowers will lose. Flowers near buildings are at risk of overheating and may also suffer from dry walls. It is not good if drops and snow fall on the plants from the roofs of houses.
Peonies requirements for soil composition
Peonies can be grown on almost all types of soil. An interesting feature is how they react to different soil compositions:
• On heavy clay soil, the flower develops more slowly, the bush itself grows short. But the stems of the plant are thick, the leaves are quite powerful, and the buds, buds and flowers are large.
• When grown on light sandy soils, you will notice that the stems and leaves are noticeably thinner, but their number is greater. In addition, the flowers are smaller.
Experienced growers prefer to grow peonies on loam-type soils. They should not only be well filled with fertilizers, but also well drained. Peonies are moisture-loving, but they cannot grow in damp or wetlands. In such conditions, their roots rot. Among other things, peonies prefer a neutral or slightly acidic soil reaction.
Peony planting technology
Another interesting feature of peonies is that their roots grow in depth as far as the soil is cultivated and cultivated. When they reach hard soil layers, they do not break down, but continue to grow in the upper layers. From this, the flower lacks the nutrients supplied with moisture.
To prevent this from happening, the planting pit for the peony rhizomes multiplied by division is made quite deep - about 50 cm. Organic fertilizers should be placed at the bottom: ripe compost, rotted manure, peat - about two shovels. A layer of earth is placed on the fertilizer so that the roots do not come into contact with organic matter. The planting depth of the root should be such that the soil layer is about 4-5 cm to the surface of the earth. If you place the planting material too deep, the bush will delight you with a developed vegetative mass, but you will not have to wait for flowering soon.
The reproduction of peonies begins in August and continues until September. To do this, choose plants that are at least 6 years old. There is no need to prepare planting material in advance. If the roots lie down for a while, they begin to dry out, and this will affect the growth rate. It is better to prepare the planting material on the day on which the plant transplant is scheduled.
