Despite the fact that the hot summer has already ended, it is still a hot time on the personal plot. Especially for those who are engaged in floriculture. After all, the time has come to plant many perennials in flower beds. And how not to be mistaken with which bulbs it is time to "settle in the beds", and which planting material should still be kept in order not to plant it too early
The most unpretentious and winter-hardy - Asian lily
For those who would like to see bright Asian lilies decorate their infield next season, you should hurry up. These hybrids can begin to be planted in open ground at the end of August, but they continue to do this in September too.
When you are a little late, experienced florists recommend looking for planting material with sprouts to buy. You will be surprised, but they can still have time to develop, bloom and lay a flower bud next year.
When planting, such a bulb is immersed to the usual depth - two or three heights, so that only the top of the sprout sticks out from the ground.
But if you plant these bulbs at the end of the month, the plant will most likely not have enough time to have time to lay a flower bud. And in the spring you can not expect the appearance of buds from them. But they will delight with flowering in autumn or summer.
Hurry up with the landing of the crocus
These perennials will also have time to please with flowering, if you hurry to plant them with a sprout in the first half of warm September.
It is a frost-resistant perennial. After flowering, it is enough to sprinkle the flower bed with fallen leaves. In one place, they can grow for four to five years. And after that, you just need to dig up the corms, separate them and start planting again with a green sprout.
Don't rush to plant tulips
Tulips, as well as crocuses, daffodils should be planted on a flower bed no earlier than the temperature outside the window drops to + 10 … + 15 ° С. In this weather, the bulbs will have time to take root in the open field, but will not start growing yet, and will winter well.
What happens if you plant flowers too early? There is a risk that they will wake up and sprout instead of entering the dormant period for the winter. Therefore, it is necessary to wait for a moderate temperature so that they do not have time to germinate. There is no need to rush with them as with the Asiatic lilies.
What else should you pay attention to before landing besides weather conditions? Of course, the quality of the planting material. It is good if it is possible to choose and buy tulip bulbs by the piece. But sometimes there is no choice but to purchase a packaged set. Or in general - when ordering via the Internet, it is impossible to control the quality and health of the bulbs. Then it remains only to carefully examine and touch the bulbs, based on what was available. A good bulb will be firm and there will be no rot under the scales. Many growers complain of such an ailment as blue mold. If you find such a defect, and still dare to plant the bulbs, then before that you must definitely pickle them. For this, universal fungicides are suitable.
Planting depth of bulbs
In addition, in the fall, planting of hazel grouses, daffodils, hyacinths is carried out. A general rule of thumb is to place the bulb in the soil about two to three times its size. The larger the bulb, the deeper into the ground it needs to be hidden. For example:
• daffodils - to a depth of 15 cm;
• crocuses - about 10 cm;
• muscari - approximately 7 cm;
• small hyacinth - 10 cm;
• large hyacinth - 15 cm;
• tulips - 10 cm;
• woodlands - 7 cm.
The mechanical composition of the soil is also important. On heavy clay soils, the bulbs are planted closer to the surface, and if light sandy soils, then deeper.
Well, so that the bulbs are not damaged by rodents, and then it is easier to get the planting material out of the soil, it is better to plant them in bulky clay pots or metal cans with holes in the bottom.
