The optimal time for reproduction of peonies by dividing rhizomes is August-September. The planting hole should be prepared in advance. But it is better to dig out the rhizomes on the day of planting, so that the planting material does not dry out. So it will be easier for the plant to take root in a new place
Planting pit preparation
The rhizome itself is not planted very deeply in the ground. There should be about 4 cm between the bud and the surface of the earth, and the ends of the roots should not go deeper than 30 cm. However, the pit will need to be filled with fertilizers, but in such a way that there is an earthen layer between the organic matter and the roots. Therefore, the depth of the planting pit turns out to be about 50-60 cm. Plants are planted no closer than 100 cm from each other.
Fertilizer for peony is prepared from an organic mixture and mineral additives. It includes:
• rotted manure;
• compost;
• peat.
For 15-20 kg of organic matter, add:
• superphosphate - 400 g;
• potassium sulfate - 200 g.
Superphosphate can be replaced with the same amount of bone meal.
Peonies prefer neutral, loose soil. If the soil has an acidic reaction, then lime is added to the nutrient mixture. Heavy soil can be loosened with river sand. One pit will need a bucket of material. When the soil is sandy, the structure is improved with crushed clay and fertile soil.
Approximately a third of the planting pit is filled with the nutrient mixture. The rest of the volume is filled with high-quality fertile soil rich in humus.
Dividing the rhizome before planting
The division of the peony bush begins when the plant is at least 6 years old. The peony has rather thick roots, but despite this, they are very fragile and break easily. Therefore, you need to dig the plant out of the ground very carefully.
Before proceeding with the division, the rhizome must be rinsed under running water - this way it will be easier to determine how best to cut the planting material. The remains of the flower stems are cut off. You also need to immediately remove the diseased, damaged root processes with a sterilized knife. All remaining specimens are shortened to 10 cm. The sections are treated with wood ash.
The rhizome is cut so that each division has at least 3-5 strong eyes and the same number of roots. If the planting material has more buds than roots, then the flower will be deficient in nutrition. If there are few eyes, in the first year the plant will experience difficulties with the formation of new roots, and in the future - with an insufficiently developed root system as a whole.
Planting peony rhizome
The planting hole is filled by two-thirds and only after that the delenka is placed in it. The roots should be free to flow in their natural direction of growth, without kinking or crushing. Make sure that the kidneys are at the level of 4-5 cm from the edge of the pit. Once below, the plant may lose its ability to bloom. And when the planting is performed higher, then if the plant is not damaged by frost, as a result, its roots will be forced out of the ground.
Before completely filling the rhizome with earth, the pit must be watered, and only then the buds must be hidden underground. In the future, you need to monitor the weather and its forecast. After planting, the soil should be moistened every 2-3 days for 3 weeks. If the rains do not help in this matter, then additional watering must be carried out by yourself.
For the winter, the transplanted peonies need to be hidden under a layer of mulch. Peat is best suited for these purposes. You can use fallen leaves. With the arrival of spring, plantings are freed from mulch. Make sure that the buds are not on the surface of the soil. If this happens, you need to immediately pour on top of the earth.
