Surely you have more than once met materials on how you can attract birds or butterflies to a garden, but for some reason you have undeservedly forgotten about bats. Many consider them unattractive, sometimes even frightening creatures that only harm a person. However, bats are much more useful than their fellows - field "holes" and can do a good job in your garden

Thunderstorm of pests

Many gardeners and gardeners are trying in vain to get rid of worms, cicadas and beetles in their plots. Moreover, they do this with the help of chemical pesticides, which cause considerable harm to garden plants. In fact, it’s much easier to think about attracting bats. After all, they eat a huge number of harmful insects, many of which fly exclusively at night, when most birds are sleeping.

Even among the moths we are used to, there are a lot of those wreckers that lay their eggs in the ground, and then gluttonous caterpillars appear from them. It is with them that bats cope - easily and quickly. In addition, night flyers eat innumerable annoying mosquitoes during their lives. In addition, these animals wonderfully pollinate flowers and fruit trees.

You cannot be called handsome

Of course, these bats do not have the attractiveness of butterflies and birds, but, nevertheless, they are calm and even shy animals that do their best to avoid contact with people. A bat gives birth to no more than 2 cubs per year. This happens most often in spring or at the very beginning of summer. Animals live for a maximum of 3 years. Their natural enemies are owls, owls, martens and, in fact, people.

Contrary to popular belief, these animals are not blind, they see well in the dark. Echolocation helps them to orient themselves well in space and find even the smallest insects, which are their main diet.

Unmerited extermination

The number of bats has dropped dramatically over the past few years. There are several reasons for this. First of all, the widespread use of insecticides has led to the fact that insects have become much less, and it is they who serve as food for the night "Batmen". In addition, these substances often cause poisoning in the bats themselves.

The number of secluded places intended for the wintering of these animals is also rapidly decreasing.

Many people, after finding their accumulation in their attic, promptly drive the mice out into the street or simply destroy them. Gardeners cut down old trees where bats spend the night, so, in the end, they simply have nowhere to go. But experienced gardeners know very well that you need to be friends with bats and attract them to your garden, keeping them there. There are several simple ways to do this.

1. Provide water

Bats, however, like any other animal, must drink water every evening. Therefore, they will be attracted by any water source located near your site. It can be a pond or a river. If there is no such source, then you can simply install a small fountain or even put an old bathtub filled with water.

2. Prepare food

In order for bats to visit your site regularly, there must be enough food in the garden for them, that is, insects. Plant all kinds of scented flowers and herbs, including night flowering plants (evening primrose, tobacco, mirabilis, heliotrope, rosemary, lavender, buddleya, honeysuckle, etc.). In addition, these wonderful animals love areas with trees and shrubs, because there are a lot of all kinds of bugs and butterflies on them, which can be collected directly from the crown without dropping to the ground.

3. Build housing

Bats need a suitable habitat, but as we said above, this is a big problem today. But you can always build a small house for these animals, in which they will settle and will help you cope with various garden pests. Mouse dwellings can be made from regular wooden planks, but note that the non-planed part of them must be inside so that the mice can cling to it. The house must be attached at a considerable distance from the ground so that predators do not reach its residents.

If you live in the north, then it is advisable to paint the house in a dark color in order for the sun to warm it well, and if in the south, then accordingly with light paint that can reflect heat. Be prepared for the fact that after 6 months or a maximum of two years, bats will want to find a new house. And a year after the housewarming, they may well return to the old one.
