Autumn is a wonderful and at the same time rather troublesome time of the year, because there is so much to do before the onset of winter! In order for the plot to come to life in the literal sense of the word with the arrival of spring, it is necessary to carry out a number of important autumn works. And in order to complete all autumn work on time, you should not postpone them until later, because the first autumn frosts can break out completely unexpectedly, crossing out all plans and greatly spoiling the mood
What to do in the garden
In the garden, with the onset of autumn, it is necessary to rake all the old fallen fruits and fallen leaves from under the trees, since they are a fertile place for wintering not only the larvae of harmful insects, but also for various viruses and fungi. Also, all mummified fruits must be removed from fruit trees - fruit mold often overwinters in them. If this advice is neglected, the accumulated pathogen can easily lead to infection of the fruits of the next season.
It is recommended to make glue circles around fruit trees - this is necessary in order to close access to trees for various harmful insects and their voracious larvae. It is equally important to be puzzled by the protection of trees and shrubs from rodent invasions.
One of the most important gardening work in the fall is the so-called water recharge irrigation. Both shrubs and trees need such watering. If you ignore this event, the wood will gradually dry out, and the trees will become more vulnerable to winter freezing. To carry out water-charging irrigation, approximately in October or November, it is necessary to dig small grooves around the tree-trunk circles. On average, their depth should be about ten to fifteen centimeters. It is in these grooves that irrigation is subsequently carried out. For adult fruiting apple trees, the irrigation rate is in the range from forty to sixty liters of water per square meter. And plums, cherries and young apple trees are watered at the rate of thirty-five to fifty liters of water per square meter. As for berry bushes, it is enough to spend from twenty-five to forty liters of water on them. By the way, with the last water-charging irrigation, it will be nice to add a small amount of complex mineral fertilizers. And only after that, all grooves should be sealed with earth as carefully as possible.
Also in the autumn, it is customary to carry out formative, rejuvenating and sanitary pruning of horticultural crops. It is especially important to properly cut the berry bushes, and then process them from various pests. Fruiting raspberry shoots must be cut to soil level in such a way that not even a hint of hemp remains. In black currants, without regret, you need to cut off all weakened, old and separately growing shoots, paying special attention to those that are at the soil level. The fact is that this berry culture is capable of bearing fruit well exclusively on strong young shoots. And red currants, just like white ones, need to be cut as accurately as possible, since the best berries are formed on their old branches. As for the gooseberry, they usually remove the incorrectly grown, low-hanging and old shoots from it.
And, of course, do not forget about heat-loving crops: before the onset of frost, they must be well covered.
What needs to be done in the garden
In the garden, the volume of autumn work is also very decent. All residues of tops should be eliminated from the beds, and then thoroughly dig up the ground. It is especially important to dig up heavy soils, on which they try to leave large clods of earth without breaking them. With the onset of winter, these moisture-laden earth clods freeze, as a result of which the soil subsequently becomes lighter and more porous.
It is also necessary to prepare the beds for early planting of vegetables and plan the site for subsequent plantings, taking into account the basic rules of crop rotation.
And lovers of an early harvest can safely proceed to autumn and winter plantings. In the period from August to September, radishes, cilantro and dill salad can be planted on the beds vacated after harvest. If you cover them with a film, then they will calmly survive even the first night frosts. And before winter, turnips, garlic, onions, carrots, beets and some other crops are often sown.
