How to combine business with pleasure - those owners of personal plots who grow marigolds will be able to answer this question. These perky bright flowers delight the eye and bring tangible benefits to gardeners, protecting various crops from diseases and pests with their presence. Let's take a closer look at these wonderful plants
Reliable helper in pest control
Due to the fact that marigolds are a source of phytoncides - biologically active substances that suppress the development of pathogens - they are successfully used by farmers to protect garden beds, garden plantings, flower beds. It is a great helper in the fight against the ubiquitous nematode, which affects a variety of crops, from potatoes to strawberries. Beds with roses, clematis, phlox will improve the planting of marigolds.
Marigolds cope with the invasion of larger parasites. Their pretty curly flowers save cabbage and carrots from many species of insects. The aroma of marigolds will scare away pests who are not averse to feasting on currant plantings.
Breeding methods for marigolds
It is quite simple to propagate marigolds on your site. If varietal seeds were purchased for the first time, after the flowers have dried up, seed can be easily collected from them. About a hundred of such thin "feathers" will ripen in one flower. When buying hybrid plants, it is not recommended to collect seed from them, since the varietal characteristics of the offspring are split.
Sowing seeds can be done in different ways. On the flower garden, seeds are planted directly into the ground. And when they plan to plant flowers next to vegetable beds, it is better to use seedlings of plants about 45 days old. It is necessary to calculate the moment of disembarkation based on the characteristics of the weather conditions of your region, since these flowers are very sensitive even to slight frosts. By the way, marigolds take root very well, and if necessary, you can transplant plants even during flowering.
To grow seedlings, the seed can be wrapped for germination in a roll on wet toilet paper, hidden in a bag and left in a warm place until the roots appear. When the seeds are baked, soil is poured over them and placed in a bright place, where the seedlings will grow before picking.
You can sow a lot of seeds for germination on a layer of moist soil in a seedling container. The seeds are not buried in the ground, they are laid flat on the surface of the soil. It may be tempting to stick the seed vertically into the ground, but under these conditions, the seed often rots. But it is necessary to create a greenhouse effect. For this, the crops are covered with glass or a cut 5-liter plastic bottle.
Crop care consists in regular ventilation. The seeds germinate very quickly. The cover is removed from the container with seedlings and the box is exposed to the sun.
Transplanting seedlings to a large feeding area is carried out when the plants form a pair of true leaves.
Before transplanting, the plants should be watered abundantly with warm water and the container should be allowed to stand. Meanwhile, the cups are filled with soil and deep holes are made - the roots of the seedlings are long, and the seedlings need to be buried up to the cotyledon leaves.
When there are a lot of seedlings, in order to save space, they are transplanted into plastic "handkerchiefs". To do this, use clean garbage bags, which are cut into squares with sides of about 20 cm. A handful of soil is placed on the edge of the "handkerchief", a seedling is placed on it and covered with another layer of earth on top. Then the "handkerchief" is rolled up and the edges are fixed with a thin elastic band, tape or plaster.
The resulting rolls with seedlings are placed vertically in a common box. It is more convenient to lay them in a horizontal position, placing the box on its side. After transplanting, the plants need to be watered.
