Once upon a time, tulip bulbs were worth their weight in gold. Now everyone can afford this delicate flower. And all the same, I do not want the planting material to disappear or deteriorate. After all, how these bright spring flowers cheer you up after the winter cold! However, summer is not always pleasing with favorable weather for plants. And if the season has turned out to be excessively rainy, it happens that by the time it is time to dig out the tulips according to the calendar, they still do not show signs of readiness for this. What to do? And then how to save the planting material before planting?

If the leaves have not turned yellow

When should you dig up tulip bulbs? Considering that many varieties have been bred by the efforts of breeders that bloom early and later, experienced growers are guided by the state of the leaves. They should turn yellow, but not dry yet.

However, when the first half of summer is too rainy, there are also such incidents that all the dates for excavation have already passed, and the flower still stands with green leaves. In this case, you still need to dig out the onion. In wet ground, they will simply begin to rot, and there will still be a chance to save the planting material.

Interesting. Tulips came to our region from hotter countries, where the bulb was able to sit out in a warm, dry ground during a dormant period. And in the middle lane, when hot summers give way to cool and wet autumn, unnatural conditions are created for tulips, so perennials have to be dug up.

Also, look closely at the bulbs after digging. It is possible that they have already been able to ripen, although the leaves have not yet had time to transfer all the nutrients to them and turn yellow.

• If the bulb is ripe, you can easily separate the bottom with roots from it and tear off the leaves.

• When the bottom has not yet departed, then you can leave it with roots for now, only clear it of the earth. Such specimens should be allowed to dry after digging for about two days, and the roots will more easily begin to separate from the bottom of the bulb.

Prevention of tulip diseases

Dry the bulbs before storing them. Then they can be freed from the covering scales. The bulbs should be immediately examined for rot, mold, and other diseases. If such are found, they should not be stored with healthy planting material. But you can still try to save it by treating sore spots.

Blue mold, which loves to parasitize on bulbous ones, may just be hiding under the covering scales. And the sooner you find it, the more chances you have to save the flowers.

And for prevention, do not interfere with etching even healthy-looking planting material in a solution of biofungicides. This can be done both before storage and after storage - before planting in a flower bed.

Storage temperature of tulip bulbs

Store tulip bulbs before planting in the fall in a dry and warm place. You cannot leave them in a cool cellar, because this will disrupt the process of laying a flower bud, which will give buds next summer. Also, don't leave them in the refrigerator.

Under natural conditions in their homeland, tulips "rest" in the ground at a temperature of about +20 degrees, and it gradually decreases to about +14. Such conditions can be fully ensured by leaving your bulbs in the summer until autumn in the country in an unheated house. And when the time comes - plant them after that on a flower bed.

Depth of planting tulips

To prevent tulips from freezing in the ground in winter, you need to choose the correct planting depth. The rule here is. If the bulb is adult and large, which should bloom next year, then it is placed at the height of three bulbs. When this is a small baby, then planting is carried out at two heights of the bulb. Then next spring it will grow its size to the desired thickness, and it will bloom in a year.
