Amaryllis belladonna is a flower that originates from South and Central America and has also been seen to be found in the Caribbean. This flower is a monotypic genus, in other words, only one plant species is included in this genus. Amaryllis belladonna should be classified as a perennial plant that is most often found in the plains of both the tropics and subtropics. The flower belongs to a family called amaryllidaceae.
Very often, some plants from this family are mistakenly classified as lilies, but this is not the case. Actually, the group of amaryllis plants differs from lily plants by the very location of the ovary. At the same time, amaryllis is a more developed plant in the biological sense of the word than lilies.
Description of amaryllis belladonna
The flower has a vertical stem, the height of which can vary from five to sixty centimeters. At the top of this stem are flowers, the width of which can be from ten to twenty centimeters; these flowers have very brightly colored perianth leaves. In addition, amaryllis belladonna is also endowed with three outer sepals, as well as three inner petals. On the trunks of the flower, you can see dots, the shade of which will most often be dark red. The bulbs range in diameter from three to eleven centimeters and are capable of producing three to seven leaves, which can also vary in length.
Growing a plant
In the open field, amaryllis belladonna can only be grown where there is no particularly severe frost in winter. To grow this flower, an exclusively drained soil is also required, while its seedbed should be located about fifteen centimeters above the ground.
The planting period is considered to be from October to the end of April. The roots of the plant are initially placed in warm water, where they should remain for about a couple of hours. In the event that you are not going to plant the bulbs right away, it is recommended to store them in a dark place, the temperature in which does not exceed ten degrees Celsius. For example, a refrigerator would be the ideal solution.
So, when planting amaryllis in the ground, half of the bulb should be above the nutrient soil. The bulbs should be lightly sprinkled with earth, and after planting is fully completed, the garden should be thoroughly watered. After about seven to ten weeks, the flower will begin to bloom, it is worth noting that this happens much faster in spring than in winter. If you want amaryllis to bloom constantly in your garden, then you should plant them at intervals of about two weeks, starting in October.
To retain moisture and prevent the appearance of weeds, mulching the soil will allow. As for fertilizers, equal proportions of peat and perlite would be ideal. The plant should be watered regularly, as well as fertilized. Usually, gardeners do this throughout the summer so that the flower can develop normally in the future. In early autumn, the plant begins to wilt, then you will need to cut the bulb and remove it from the soil, after which the bulb can be stored. This bulb should be stored in a pot and in a warm place with constant direct sunlight. Watering should be done in moderation until the stem appears, after which the amount of water should be increased. Now the trunk will begin its rapid development, and you will have to closely monitor the state of the plant. Withered flowers should be removed immediately, while the stem is cut off exclusively above the bulb. Only in this case amaryllis belladonna will develop normally, as well as delight all gardeners with its amazing beauty.
