Albizia (lat. Albizia) - a genus of shrubs and trees belonging to the Legumes family. The genus got its name in honor of the Italian botanist F. Albizzi. It was he who brought this unique plant from Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey) to Italy in the distant 1740s. The people of the genus are called a silk bush. In its natural environment, albicia is found in tropical countries, including Australia and New Guinea. It is a long-liver.

Characteristics of culture

Albitsia is represented by shrubs and trees no more than 6 m in height, although in nature you can find representatives of 15-20 m in height. Albizia is characterized by an umbrella-shaped openwork crown, up to 5-7 m in diameter. The foliage of plants is pinnately dissected, openwork, endowed with an openwork edge, color green or light green, often with a whitish tint on the inside.

The flowers are white with pink stamens, collected in fluffy paniculate inflorescences. Flowering begins in mid-May and lasts until the third decade of August - the first decade of September. The fruits are multi-seeded, rather flat beans 15 to 20 cm long. At first, the beans are green, then they take on a straw, brown or brown color.

One of the most common types -

Albizia Lankaran (lat. Albizia julibrissin) … The plant is characterized by unpaired two-pinnate foliage, dividing into 9-15 small lobes, which, in turn, bear from 15 to 30 leaves, endowed with small petioles. The foliage is dark green, whitish below. The flowers are white with a yellowish tint, the stamens are pink or pink-white. Flowers are collected in corymbose paniculate inflorescences. Fruits are elongated, oval, flat, green at first, then brown or brown.

Growing features

Albizia is grown most often by seed method. Sowing is carried out in room conditions in the third decade of February - the first decade of March. Before sowing, the seeds are soaked in warm water and wait until they swell. Seeds are sown in wide pots filled with sand and peat soil. Embedding depth - 1 cm.

It is advisable to sow in separate containers, if sowing in a box, then the distance between crops should be at least 10 cm. Watering is carried out from a spray bottle, and then covered with a film and placed on the windowsill. The optimum growing temperature is 20-25C. It is important to systematically remove the film for airing and watering.

It is important to remember that albicia is a thermophilic plant. Outdoors, it can only be cultivated in the southern regions of the country. In central Russia, cultivation is possible only in indoor conditions. Landing in open ground is carried out the next year after planting. It is recommended to plant in a well-lit area with diffused light at midday. The soil is preferable rich, loose, permeable. Albizia will not tolerate community with damp, heavy and poor soil.

Culture care

One of the important manipulations for the care of the crop is watering, especially in the heat. But it must be remembered that albicia does not like waterlogging. Dampness is detrimental to plants. It is also necessary to regularly loosen the soil, the formation of compaction is unacceptable. Do not neglect mulching. Any natural material can be used as mulch, such as cut grass or fallen leaves.

Top dressing is required. In total, three dressings should be carried out during the season. The first in early spring at the time of bud break with nitrogen-containing fertilizers. The second at the moment of inflorescence formation by means of complex mineral fertilizers. The third in the third decade of August by means of potash and phosphorus fertilizers. Nitrogen fertilizers are not required in the third feeding, as they provoke the formation of new shoots, which do not have time to mature before the onset of cold weather and freeze.
