Digging, sorting and storing tulip bulbs

Summer flies by quickly, and very soon the flower beds in the gardens will be empty. And so that next spring the lush flowering of the flower beds comes again, this needs to be taken care of this season

Don't leave tulips in the flower garden for the winter

Tulip bulbs are capable of wintering in the ground. But you shouldn't leave them in the ground. The fact is that up to 4 new bulbs are formed in such bulbs throughout the year. From this planting will become thickened, and the plants will not have enough water and the required amount of nutrients. This will affect them by a slowdown in development and eventually end up with a lack of flowering. Therefore, it is necessary to choose tulip bulbs from the ground every year.

In addition, the bulbs are dug out and the tulip planting site is changed for sanitary and preventive purposes. This measure prevents the spread of fungal and other diseases among flowers.

Digging bulbs in the garden

The timing of digging the bulbs largely depends on the composition of the soil. On light soils, this work is done early, and on heavier clay soils - later. The optimal time will be prompted by the type of planting material itself. Experienced growers recommend starting digging when a third of the covering scales on the replacement bulb acquires a pale brown tint.

The longer these works are postponed, the more the covering membrane is damaged from cracking, as a result of which the scales are separated, and the bulb tissue becomes more vulnerable to fusarium - a fungal disease, from which the peduncles grow short, thinner, the size of the flower becomes noticeably less varietal characteristics. In addition, an infected specimen poses a threat to healthy ones during winter storage of planting material. An infected bulb can be recognized by this sign: brown spots appear on the bottom, bordered by clear dark red borders.

Storage preparation

Immediately after the digging, a preliminary cleaning of the earth and leaves is carried out, but they cannot be immediately stored for storage. They need to be given time to dry. This may take about 2 weeks. And even then you can start cleaning from the remnants of the mother plant. When the drying has taken place qualitatively, the remains of the tulip stems do not break off, but are easily separated without the slightest effort. Dry soil will sprinkle more easily if you sieve the bulbs first. Then the remnants of the earth are removed by hand.

Daughter bulbs are carefully separated. In this case, it is necessary to vigilantly monitor that bulbs do not penetrate into the storage, on which brown and gray with yellow spots have formed. This will not only rot itself, but also infect the neighbors with gray rot. Then you will have to say goodbye to the planting material, because the plants grown from it will not bring aesthetic pleasure, and they themselves will soon degenerate.

Storage bookmark

Bulbs are sorted not only by variety, but also by size. Do not forget to indicate the variety name and other necessary data on the containers with planting material. During the winter, some of the information will be forgotten, and in the spring you will be glad that you made such notes.

Planting material is stored in baskets and boxes. They are removed to dry and well-ventilated rooms, where the air temperature is maintained at about + 20 ° C, and the humidity is no more than 80%. Sheds, warm attics and basements are suitable for these purposes. During the cold season, it is necessary to check whether the conditions of detention are correct. Deviations in humidity levels from the norm are fraught with consequences such as the development of diseases or cracking of the bulbs. A rise in temperature will awaken the tulip's life processes in advance. Therefore, make sure that the bulb does not start regrowth.
