Pine (Latin Pinus) - the genus of aromatic conifers of the Pine family (Latin Pinaceae) is the most numerous in this plant community. It can be shrubs, mighty trees or elfin - a kind of coniferous vine creeping over the harsh land of cold climatic territories. Pines are unique healers of airspace and humans. Certain species of Pine provide the inhabitants of the taiga and humans with a nutritious product, which people call "nuts", although from a biological point of view, these are not nuts, but simply seeds of the Pine.

What's in your name

There is no unambiguous meaning of the scientific name of the genus of conifers "Pinus" in the botanical literature. There are two, and possibly more, versions, which are based on two different languages.

According to one version, the Latin name of the genus is based on the Celtic word "pin", which means "rock". Since the pines during the stay of the ancient people on the Earth grew on the rocks, the Celts allegedly called the mighty tree with the same word.

According to the second version, the Latin name of the genus is based on the Latin word "pix", which in Russian sounds like "resin", thereby emphasizing the resinous essence of the plants of the genus.

Both versions highlight some particular aspects characteristic of plants of the genus, and therefore it is difficult to give preference to one of them.

Description

Pine is one of the oldest representatives of terrestrial vegetation. In the sediments of rocks, the age of which scientists determine at 130 million years, the fossilized remains of a coniferous tree have been preserved. This is not only the oldest inhabitant of the planet, but also one of the long-livers, whose average age is determined by hundreds of years. If a tree does not fall under the ax of a lumberjack or does not burn in the flames of periodic forest fires, then it can successfully live for 4 thousand years.

This lifespan allows the Pine to grow into a large tree covered with green needles all year round. If the living conditions do not allow the tree to show all its abilities, then the plant turns into a tall shaggy shrub or protects its branches from bitter frosts, covering the surface of the earth with them and getting the name "Pine elfin".

The distinctive leaves of the Pine are of two types. On the shortened shoots, there are green needle-like leaves that do not like loneliness, and therefore form bundles of several sharp needles. The number of needles in one bunch varies from 2 to 5. Long shoots flaunt brown scaly leaves.

The so-called "cones", under their woody or leathery scales, similar to roof tiles, hide the seeds of the plant until they are fully ripe. Seeds, as a rule, have miniature wings that help them fly out of the parental home when ripe and ready to give life to new Pines.

The seeds of some Pine species are edible and are readily eaten by birds, squirrels, chipmunks, bears … as well as humans. In Russia, Siberian cedar pine and dwarf cedar are famous for such nutritious seeds. Pine nuts are highly valued in the world, as is the oil made from them.

Pines grow very slowly, and therefore require attention and care.

Some types of Pines

* Pinus sibirica (Siberian cedar pine) - although it has nothing to do with Cedars, the epithet "cedar" was added to the pine for its strength and power. And her seeds are pine nuts, a real healing pantry.

* Pinus edulis (Edible pine or Colorado pine).

* Pinus clausa (Sand pine) is a species native to North America.

* Pinus arizonica (Arizona pine) - native to Mexico.

* Pinus bhutanica (Bhutan pine).

* Pinus thunbergii (Thunberg Pine) - adorns the lands of Japan.

* Pinus pumila (dwarf pine, or dwarf pine).
