Felt cherry belongs to the huge family of wild cherry varieties. Nevertheless, it has long since migrated from the wild to our gardens. Gardeners appreciated it for its high frost resistance, which is much higher than that of the usual cherry, as well as excellent yield and taste of the fruit
Features and benefits of felt cherry
The homeland of the felt cherry is China, therefore it is often also called the Chinese one. Previously, it was widely known only in the East, and a couple of centuries ago it was a wonder in European gardens. But recently, this culture has become extremely popular and is grown almost everywhere.
In our area, felt cherry attracts attention primarily by its high frost resistance. The tree is able to survive long periods of cooling down to -35 ° С, and it will not be damaged by short-term frosts around -40 ° С. When the spring weather is changeable and return frosts come to the garden, this also does not disturb the condition of the felt cherry. Buds, flowers and ovaries will not harm the temperature drop outside the window to -4 ° C.
Since the felt cherry is a small shrub, certain agricultural techniques allow it to be cultivated even in certain regions of Siberia. For this, the plants are planted at an angle of 45 ° and grown in a creeping form, so that it is handy in winter to bend the branches to the ground and hide them under a layer of snow.
Among other advantages of the plant is its high resistance to diseases. And among the pests, it has practically no enemies-parasites. In addition, the ripening time for Chinese cherries is a week and a half ahead of the collection of ordinary cherries.
Another advantage of the felt cherry is its early maturity. The grafted seedlings can be harvested the next year. And when the bush is obtained through seed reproduction, the first fruits are harvested in the third year. On average, one bush brings 5-10 kg. Well, the record holders can surprise with a 20-kilogram harvest. At the same time, plants obtained from seedlings do not upset gardeners by splitting varietal traits and will completely inherit the characteristics of the mother plant.
How to deal with the disadvantages of Chinese cherries
Along with the many advantages of felt cherries, gardeners should be warned about some of the disadvantages of culture. First of all, this applies to those owners of household plots, in whose regions the onset of periods of thaw is characteristic of a frosty winter. In such conditions, annular damage to the bark occurs in the lower part of the trunk - the so-called damping-off. Also, this phenomenon can be observed in gardens, laid out on lowlands, in places where melt water accumulates. Damping-off can also occur in places where there is weak air drainage and when cherries are planted on heavy clay soil.
It is good when the landings are located on gentle slopes. The best types of soil are loam and sandy loam - they have excellent drainage properties.
To protect the pet from such damage to the bark, it is recommended to arrange high beds for planting plants. The introduction of sand, ash will also help. It is necessary to protect the planting from waterlogging. It will be useful to whitewash the branches from below.
It is important to remember that the plant belongs to the self-fertile group. Therefore, to get a harvest, you need to plant at least 3-4 plants in your garden. Planting is best done in rows. Planting holes are made at a distance of about 2-2.5 m. The row spacing is left at least 3 m.
When harvesting, it must be borne in mind that the fruits are very tender and partly lose juice during the harvesting process. Therefore, it is better to eat them right away or use them for processing and winter harvesting.
