Calceolaria (lat. Calceolaria) - a numerous genus of flowering plants belonging to the Calceolaria family. The genus got its name due to the unique shape of the flower. Outwardly, it very much resembles a shoe, which is translated into Latin as "calceolatus". In nature, representatives of the genus are widespread in South America, some species can be captured in Central America. Typical habitats are warm forest mountain slopes with diffused light and optimal humidity.

Characteristics of culture

Most species of the genus Calceolaria do not exceed half a meter in height. There are also undersized specimens up to 10 cm high. The green mass is crowned with medium-sized baggy flowers (usually up to 6-7 cm in diameter), which, depending on the species, can have a wide variety of colors - yellow, snow-white, orange, red, with this is monochromatic, speckled or small strokes. The duration of flowering depends solely on the species and growing conditions, as a rule, occurs in spring or early summer.

The main advantage of the culture in question is its high decorative effect. It looks great on any flower beds, but especially harmonious among pebbles and small stones. The disadvantage lies in the fact that representatives of the genus are extremely poorly combined with other flower cultures, since they take the whole gaze on themselves. Therefore, experienced gardeners and florists advise you to plant calceolaria, together with decorative deciduous crops, they will favorably emphasize the beauty of flowers.

Common types

Unfortunately, in Russia, calceolaria is grown infrequently due to ignorance of the peculiarities of care. However, some gardeners and florists have already settled the cherished beauties on their site, which is incredibly happy. Among the representatives of the genus, the following species crept into Russian gardens:

• Calceolaria two-flowered (Latin Calceolaria biflora) is a perennial herb, which does not exceed 35 cm in height. It has a straight stem bearing a basal rosette of petiolate obovate leaves, pubescent with white hairs. The flowers are bright, yellow, endowed with a two-lipped corolla, the lower lip of which is covered with specks of brown color.

• Calceolaria rugosa (Latin Calceolaria rugosa) is a perennial herb, which is characterized by a strongly branched stem, reaching a height of 50 cm. The foliage is medium-sized, collected in a basal rosette. The flowers are smaller than those of the previous species, but very attractive - yellow, are formed in large numbers, bloom throughout the summer. It should be noted that the species in question is involved in breeding work. To date, varieties have been obtained on its basis - Sunset, Goldbuket and Triumph de Versales. The first variety is not forbidden to grow both in the garden and indoors. In addition, it is endowed with high winter-hardy properties.

Growing features

Representatives of the genus Calceolaria belong to light-loving crops, but do not tolerate direct sunlight. Therefore, it is recommended to plant them in areas with diffused light. Soils, in turn, are preferable loose, nutritious, moderately moist. You should not try to grow calceolaria on saline, waterlogged, heavy clay, poor and dry soils. In such areas, it will not even gain a lush green mass, and what can we say about flowering.

Caring for a culture is not burdensome. It is enough to provide plants with regular watering, but without leading to waterlogging, because excess moisture promises decay of the root system. Also, the culture needs systematic feeding with complex mineral fertilizers (once a month). If you follow the listed requirements, calceolaria will delight you with abundant flowering and active growth. And in winter, the plant should be dug up, transplanted into a pot and brought into the room, stored until spring at a temperature not higher than 10C.
