Bamboo is a very popular plant in landscape design, with about a thousand species. It develops rapidly, is incredibly durable and has an extraordinary appearance. In the role of a garden plant, bamboo is now used almost everywhere. It does not require a large amount of space - it is capable of achieving high growth even in very narrow spaces. Everyone can plant bamboo on their site, for this it is enough to familiarize yourself with a number of simple rules

The use of bamboo in landscaping

In landscaping, bamboo can be used for a variety of purposes: as a hedge or as a scenic decoration at the entrance to a house. It can also serve as a background for other plants or a great frame for balconies. The wonderful foliage of bamboo makes it possible to embody the most brilliant and incredible ideas. For example, if you plant low types of bamboo and mow them intensively from time to time, you get an evergreen bamboo lawn. Moreover, bamboo is good not only live, but also dried. Bamboo sticks are an excellent support for various climbing plants (for example, grapes, etc.). It is not difficult to dry bamboo on your own - first it is cut to the very root, and then put on the floor in the house (so that all the sticks are even). Autumn is considered the most favorable time for harvesting bamboo.

Growing bamboo

For bamboo cultivation, you should prefer areas that are well protected from the piercing wind. The best conditions for it are drained soil (ideally in partial shade) or loose clay soil - bamboo shoots feel in it in the best way. Water the roots well before planting. During frosts or droughts with bamboo planting, of course, it is better to wait. If bamboo is planted in pots, it is very important to protect it from the cold - both all the shoots and the pot itself are well wrapped with plastic, and straws are placed on top of the soil.

When planting bamboo in the garden, it is important to know that it can fill the entire space quite quickly. To avoid this, a groove is dug out before planting, the walls of which are then trimmed with plastic sheets. This will allow the bamboo roots to grow in height rather than width. It is also recommended to cut the roots with pruning shears as they appear on the surface. Freshly planted bamboo should be mulched by adding dry leaves to the soil. Mulching helps to retain moisture in the soil as well as protect the roots from the sun. After some time, the leaves in sufficient quantities will fall off the bamboo themselves, and thus the required water and shade regime will be observed. In the spring, the soil is usually mulched with garden compost.

Propagation of bamboo

This process, as a rule, is not particularly difficult. In the spring, you need to dig out several stems (4 - 6 pieces are enough) of three-year-old bamboo and quickly (on the roots the soil should not have time to dry) transplant them in partial shade, keeping the planting depth familiar to them. The transplanted stems are watered abundantly, after which the tops of the shoots, cut by one third, are planted in the soil.

Bamboo care

Bamboo care needs competent. First, you should know that bamboo loves watering every day. The soil should always be moist whenever possible. Good drainage is equally important. Secondly, bamboo is very fond of light. In the summer, he also needs a huge amount of fresh air. For its cultivation, the most optimal temperature is considered to be 20 - 32 degrees. As for fertilizers, they are applied 2 times, observing an interval of 28 days. For bamboo, a high nitrogen content of the fertilizer is preferable, so fertilizers used for lawn care can also be used. Fertilizers with a thick layer of humus will also be good. However, it is important not to overdo it with them - an excess of fertilizer can significantly weaken the plant.

Bamboo itself can tell about errors in care: for example, at too low a temperature, as well as with a lack of moisture, its leaves are often covered with brown spots. With a lack of watering, the leaves may also begin to curl. And if the watering of the bamboo is too abundant, the leaves will begin to turn yellow.
