Common bamboo (lat. Bambusa vulgaris) - a herbaceous perennial plant from the genus Bamboo (lat. Bambusa), included by botanists in the Cereals family. Despite the adjective "ordinary" in the name and good recognition in the pictures, Bamboo is a very extraordinary herb that has an enviable vitality. Bamboo loves to quickly increase the height of its strong stems, creating almost impenetrable thickets in one place during its long life.
Description
The fibrous rhizome of common bamboo crawls underground, reclaiming living space from other plants in order to reveal to the world their numerous hollow stems, which lignify over the years, resembling strong tree trunks. It is not so easy to get through such a "grassy forest" for a person who has not taken a well-sharpened machete on the way.
The sturdy stem resembles a multi-storey building, made up of separate floors (knees), connected by nodal constrictions. The surface of the stem, depending on the variety, can be colored in different ways. The most common color is yellow, but there are stems lemon yellow with green stripes, or green glossy. Young stems are covered with a waxy white coating and dark pubescence. Over the years, the stem loses pubescence, becoming naked, smooth and shiny.
Narrow-lanceolate dark green leaves prefer to be located closer to the sky, forming a kind of dense crown of trees.
Once in several decades, common bamboo brings to the world numerous nondescript flowers with a straw or light brown color, forming a spike-shaped inflorescence on leafless straws (or straws may have small scale-like leaves). The low viability of pollen leads to the fact that the fruits on the common bamboo are very rare. Most often, the flower-bearing stem dies without giving any fruit. But the main stems, growing in a friendly group, survive and, within several years, bring the plant back to life due to vegetative reproduction.
Procession of ordinary bamboo across the planet
Common bamboo, born in Southeast Asia, thanks to the ability of its rhizome to control earth erosion, quickly spread across the planet, populating tropical forests in mountainous areas, where celestial streams often pour, washing away everything in its path. Particularly massive migrations began in the 20th century.
The dispersal of a fast-growing herbaceous plant was also facilitated by the value of its strong stems, used by humans for many of their needs and industries.
The unpretentiousness of common bamboo to the composition of the soil, in the presence of good drainage, ensures rapid growth of the aboveground part, which, with its dense foliage, takes away the sun's rays from homegrown plants, inhibiting the success of their growth and development. The energetic rhizome makes its contribution by displacing local plants from a long-lived territory. Therefore, with a lack of human attention, Bamboo can turn into an aggressor capable of changing the habitat and food resources of invertebrates, which will be the beginning of more global changes on the planet.
Therefore, deciding to plant ordinary bamboo in your summer cottage as an exotic ornamental plant, be extremely attentive to its growth.
Usage
In addition to combating soil erosion, ordinary bamboo is suitable for creating natural boundaries between private estates, as well as for decorative decoration of the country landscape.
In Asian countries, young stalks of common bamboo serve as a vegetable. True, such a vegetable requires hot processing before serving, since it contains toxic substances that are destroyed by heat treatment.
Ordinary bamboo furniture will decorate any suburban resting place. From its strong and beautiful stems, you can build light summer cottages.
Traditional oriental medicine uses common bamboo to treat a number of diseases, although official medicine does not confirm the plant's healing properties.
