The genus Pachysandra is small in number. It contains only 4 species of perennial herbaceous plants and evergreen shrubs. They have straight or creeping stems up to 45 centimeters high and beautiful glossy leaves, usually with a jagged edge.
Erect inflorescences-ears are formed by male and female flowers, dividing the territory of the inflorescence. Male flowers are located in the upper part of the ear, and female flowers occupy the lower half.
The flowers are transformed into seed pods or drupes with dark seeds.
Pachisandra is an effective soil protector against overheating and weeds. She quickly creates a dense decorative carpet in shaded areas where other plants refuse to take root. Moreover, the plant does not try to go beyond the territory allocated to it, respecting the right to existence of other herbs. It resists environmental pollution, and therefore is popular in city parks and gardens.
Varieties

Apical pachisandra (Pachysandra) - many varieties of the popular evergreen species have been bred, differing in growth rate, leaf color. Oblong or oval glossy leaves, usually dark green, may be covered with a white pattern. For example, in the slowly growing variety "Variegated", the green surface of the leaves is decorated with such a pattern. The smooth edge of the lower part of the leaf plate passes into a serrated one in its upper half. White flowers appear in late spring.

Pachisandra axillary (Pachysandra) is an evergreen shrub with short stems. Young shoots are white. Leathery, ovoid leaves of a dark green color have a large toothed edge. In the spring, the plant appears in the world of inflorescences of white flowers.

Pachisandra recumbent (Pachysandra) - not always evergreen. Brownish-green leaves are covered with rounded greenish-brown spots. The upper part of the sheet plate has a scalloped edge. Pinkish-brown stems and white fragrant flowers complete the decorative composition of the plant.
Growing
Pachisandra is an excellent groundcover for shady areas of the garden. It is also grown in boxes or containers to decorate terraces and balconies.
The plant tolerates heat and frost, although the combination of high air humidity with low temperatures damages the hardy leaves.
Pachisandra loves fertile soils, permeable, not prone to stagnant water. When planting in open ground in spring, the soil is enriched with organic fertilizer.
Pachisander growing in boxes needs regular watering, and in open ground watering is required only during prolonged drought. Once every 3-4 weeks, watering is combined with the introduction of complex fertilizers.
Transplanting into a new container is not carried out, but the replacement of the surface soil in the box is practiced. If the plant still tries to go beyond its territory, at the end of winter, the shoots are shortened. Otherwise, trimming is usually not required.
Reproduction
Breeding pachisandra is a sheer pleasure that does not require much effort and time. In the spring, the overgrown bushes are divided into parts, immediately planted in open ground, in their favorite places.
Can be propagated by cuttings. Apical pachisandra is propagated by rhizome processes.
Possible enemies
Growing pachisandra on heavy soils or waterlogged areas attracts fungal diseases that lead to root rot. Worms love to feast on the plant. Methods of protection and fight against enemies are standard.
