The herb bug is quite harmful to stone and pome crops, as well as to some forest species, berries and a number of vegetable crops. This businesslike scoundrel with great pleasure sucks the juices from the tops of the shoots and from young foliage, which in turn leads first to the manifestation of yellow spot, and after some time, to the complete or partial drying of the leaves attacked by pests. In addition, necrosis is often formed in the feeding places of grass bugs, and as they grow, the leaves near the necrosis begin to rupture, as a result of which characteristic holes with ragged edges can be observed on the vegetation
Meet the pest
The herb bug is a very harmful sucking insect, which is characterized by incomplete transformation (that is, this pest does not stay in the pupal stage). The length of the bodies of these harmful parasites, smooth from above, reaches 5 - 5.5 mm, and they are usually painted in yellowish-rusty or greenish-grayish tones. In addition, their bodies are almost always punctate and equipped with well-visible hairs, and bulging red eyes can be seen on the yellow heads of the pests. And on the black background of the sturdy shields of herb bugs, there is a bright yellow pattern in the form of the letter "W".
In early spring, voracious parasites get out of their safe hiding places and immediately begin to feed heavily, after which they mate. Then harmful bugs actively lay eggs, placing them in the leaves and in the stalks of various plants. And sometimes eggs can be found on the buds. The hatching of larvae begins approximately in mid-June.
The larvae of herb bugs have an external resemblance to adult insects, however, they are slightly smaller in size, and they have no wings. As a rule, they develop on forage vegetation, and during this time they manage to pass as many as five instars.
Adults mainly inhabit the upper leaves, and they feed on their lower sides, actively sucking out all the juices. As a result of such activity of pests in places of their feeding, numerous necrosis are formed, and the cells of the leaves gradually die, as a result of which the leaves curl and quickly dry out. And buds and shoots are gradually deformed. In addition, in places where grass bugs feed, you can often see their molted skins, as well as black shiny dots - this is how the excrement of harmful parasites looks like.
Most often, eggs of herb bugs overwinter - adults rarely go to winter. At the same time, adult bugs overwinter in various shelters like tree bark, fallen leaves or plant debris. These voracious parasites are able to reproduce as many as four generations per season - their more accurate number depends on climatic conditions.
How to fight
If harmful bugs began to appear on the site en masse, they begin to spray with "Fufanon", "Kinmiks" or "Karbofos". It is best to carry out treatments in the evening hours - during this period, the flight activity of harmful parasites is significantly reduced. As a rule, there is no need to carry out repeated treatments. It is equally important to get rid of weeds in a timely manner.
Grass bugs are simply incredible mobility and easily fly over very long distances, so when carrying out various protective measures, it is imperative to take this feature into account.
And in order to quickly destroy the population of enemies, before the start of mass flowering and immediately after it, it is allowed to carry out treatments with benzophosphate.
