Bamboo (lat. Bambusa) - a herbaceous perennial plant, the impressive size of which is poorly associated in the mind with the Cereals family, which appears to most people in the form of silky ears of wheat, rye or oats. But botanists have their own criteria for dividing plants into families, and therefore Bamboo, with its flowers and spiky fruits, does not differ at all from the listed cereals.
Description
The tropics of East Asia are considered the birthplace of Bamboo. This does not mean at all that it cannot be found on other continents. Bamboo even grows in Russia, for example, on the island of Sakhalin. Only there he is represented not by his tall straw-like stalks forming impenetrable bamboo thickets, but by a flexible creeping vine.
So, the appearance of Bamboo can be different depending on the living conditions. Still, the main impression about Bamboo is left by the evergreen stems-straws reaching thirty-five meters in height, gradually lignifying to such an extent that it is possible to pave a path through the bamboo forest only armed with a sharp and durable ax. Such bamboo is called "Bamboo ordinary" (lat. Bambusa vulgaris).
The stems of the plant are in a hurry to the sun, and therefore every day they grow three quarters of a meter in height. Among terrestrial plants, only Bamboo and its relatives by genus and subfamily are capable of this.
On the stem, with the help of short petioles, dark green lanceolate leaves are located. Bamboo also has scaly leaves that cover special stems, on which inflorescences-spikelets appear.
Inflorescences on Bamboo appear quite rarely, sometimes after 100 years of plant life. By this age, Bamboo is already tired of our planet, so he decides to show the world his androgynous flowers, pollinated by the obliging wind, so that, after allowing the fruits to ripen, die, giving way to a new generation. For the population, the appearance of inflorescences is a tragedy, because they lose material for the production of various household items in order to provide food for their many families.
In the intervals between rarely occurring flowering, bamboo reproduces vegetatively, showing new shoots from the fibrous rhizome.
Usage
The main direction of using unique straws is the manufacture of household items, including the manufacture of wicker furniture, the fashion for which is passing and then reviving again. True, today Bamboo has a rival in this business, a beautifully flowering, unpretentious and fast-growing Lantana - a shrub with flexible branches that are much more durable and hardy than bamboo stems. They are much more successful in resisting the destructive effects of sunlight, moisture and insects that love to feast on Bamboo stalks, which are high in carbohydrates.
Bamboo with the Latin name "Bambusa bambos" (Indian thorny bamboo), the stems of which are armed with curved strong thorns, are used to make stairs and bridges. Ayurvedic medicine, proven for millennia, uses the roots, young shoots and juice of this type of Bamboo in the treatment of many diseases.
Bamboo is widely used as an ornamental plant. From it live green border hedges and fences are arranged.
