The strawberry nematode, which cannot be seen with the naked eye, is especially active in May and June. And since these merciless pests feed on the contents of plant cells, the result of their destructive activity is the browning and gradual death of damaged tissues. Tiny buds dry out quickly, and the leaves developing from them curl, thicken and become whole-edged and crooked. The leaf petioles are noticeably shortened, the developing peduncles are deformed and thickened, and juicy berries are not formed at all. To avoid such an unpleasant situation, it is imperative to fight with strawberry nematodes
Meet the pest
The strawberry nematode is a very small and almost transparent worm that can only be seen with a microscope. These merciless creatures are especially harmful to strawberries and strawberries, as well as some ornamental plants. They live mainly in bush buds and leaf sinuses of strawberry bushes. At the same time, the greatest number of pests reaches in the first half of summer and with the onset of autumn.
Strawberry nematodes average about 1 mm in size. These voracious scoundrels overwinter in the buds located near the plant bases, withstanding even the most severe and merciless frosts. And with the onset of spring, the females begin to lay eggs. It is noteworthy that the full development cycle of harmful parasites takes from twelve to fifteen days - after this time, eggs are laid by females of a new generation. By the way, during a single season, up to eight generations of vicious nematodes develop successfully.
Berry bushes attacked by strawberry nematodes become dwarf and squat, and their peduncles with buds are greatly shortened, noticeably thickened and become excessively fleshy and powerful. The leaf petioles lose their former pubescence and gradually become thinner, and the leaflets of the leaves become leathery and colored in dark tones. And sometimes they noticeably decrease or stretch.
How to fight
For planting, it is necessary to use exclusively healthy plants, that is, all strawberry antennae taken for laying new beds should be taken only from areas not covered by strawberry nematodes. As for specimens with symptoms of dwarfism or deformation of leaves, they should be discarded and destroyed as quickly as possible. It is especially important to do this in May and June. In addition, it is extremely important to systematically weed out the weeds.
Another important preventive measure is the strict adherence to the rules of crop rotation - it is permissible to plant strawberries on old beds only after three or four years. And the soil on which it is grown must be disinfected by a thermal method (using hot steam).
If strawberries grow on industrial sites, it is advisable to treat them with high-quality nematicides.
Since often the enemies of strawberries spread along with the seedlings, you can fight them by processing berry bushes in hot water. For this, the seedlings are placed in water for a quarter of an hour, the temperature of which is in the range of forty-six to forty-seven degrees. It is quite enough to process young leaves and horns in this way. True, such thermotherapy should be carried out exclusively during the period when plants are at rest. For this purpose, they are dug up in early spring and immediately warmed up. And in order to neutralize the possible heat shock, after processing in hot water, the vegetation is cooled in water with a temperature of ten to fifteen degrees for several minutes. By the way, some summer residents carry out heat treatment of strawberry bushes right in the beds.

This to a large extent contributes to a sharp decline in the commercial quality of the crop. In the young
Greening Strawberry And Strawberry Petals
Greening of petals affects not only strawberries with strawberries, but also asters with clovers, plantains, petunias, phloxes and dandelions. Often, the causative agent of the disease even persists on them. The lifespan of infected bushes is very short - a maximum of two years. Such bushes freeze easily in winter, and are also extremely sensitive to almost any unfavorable climatic conditions. And the harvest from most of the petals of berry bushes affected by greening does not come at all
