This amazing plant native to South America has long gained popularity in our latitudes. More and more often, many summer residents are interested in how to grow this culture in their personal plot? This task is more than doable with certain knowledge and appropriate diligence
A few words about peanuts
Peanut is an annual plant growing in the form of bushes, with slightly pubescent branches, about 75 cm in height and blooming with medium-sized yellow flowers. It has a branching, very developed root that penetrates into the ground to a depth of one and a half meters. There are two types of peanuts: bush and creeping. There are also varieties with erect shoots. The branchy stems of the bush type of peanut can reach 60 cm, and in the creeping species - 15 - 25 m. The cocoon-like shape is characteristic of the beans; their shell is rather fragile, reddish, light brown or dark brown in color.
Growing peanuts
Peanuts are grown either outdoors or in seedlings. Due to the fact that the plant is light-loving, the area chosen for planting peanuts should be illuminated by the sun as best as possible throughout the day. However, slight shading is also allowed. For planting, in addition to seeds, pieces of beans are also prepared.
Outdoor cultivation. Seeds are planted in such soil when the temperature is set at 20 degrees. And the earth itself must warm up to at least 15 degrees. Often this happens already in early May. When planting seeds, it is imperative to check the looseness of the soil, because as soon as the ovaries begin to form, the fruits are sent to ripen underground, literally burrowing in it. Not only after sowing the seeds, but also when the very first shoots appear, peanuts should be constantly protected from blackbirds and crows, which can easily destroy absolutely the entire crop. As for the seed planting scheme, it is no different from the seedling planting method.
Seedling growing. Seeds begin to be planted in April at a depth equal to 3 centimeters, in small cups prepared in advance for this. Since soft soil is most preferable for peanuts, accordingly, the soil should be loose and fluffy. The cups with the seeds planted in them are placed on a windowsill illuminated by the sun, watering them moderately from time to time. In early June, the contents of the cups are planted in the ground, in previously prepared beds (each of them requires not only digging and good drying, but also the complete elimination of all existing weeds along with rhizomes, as well as loosening the earth). When planting seedlings in the beds, they try to keep the distance between the plants at 15 - 20 cm, and between the rows - at 60 - 70 cm.
How to care for peanuts
Care must necessarily be regular: periodically you need to loosen the soil, carefully weed the beds, and also fight all kinds of pests and unpleasant diseases. An area overgrown with weeds will definitely not guarantee a bountiful harvest. It is ideal to weed the beds after rainfall or watering.
As soon as the first ovaries are formed in the peanuts, they begin to spud it regularly - this is done by analogy with potatoes. The peanuts are watered quite sparingly, trying to prevent the soil from drying out. Although he is partial to moisture, too moist soil is definitely not suitable for him. It is necessary to intensify watering up to 3 - 4 times a month only during the flowering period.
This culture usually tolerates the application of various mineral fertilizers well - such fertilizers should be applied three times per season: during the periods of fruit setting, budding, and also during the ripening of the leaves.
Attacks by aphids, thrips and caterpillars are not bypassed, including peanuts, and such invasions must be fought against. As for diseases, peanuts are most susceptible to root and stem rot, fungal spot and various viral diseases.
When to harvest
Determining the exact time of harvesting is extremely difficult, because beans always ripen underground. To check if the crop is ready for harvest, you can dig up one fruit and look. Basically, this happens when the air temperature reaches 10 degrees. Harvesting is necessary, if possible, in dry weather, when the leaves on the bushes have not yet turned yellow - in this case, it is easier to remove the bushes from the soil, after digging them up a little. Timely harvesting is important for the reason that if you miss the harvest time, a colossal part of the fruits will remain in the ground in this case. As soon as the crop is harvested, all the bushes need to be thoroughly dried - for this they are located in places with good ventilation or in sunny places. The bushes are dried for 5 days. And to determine how well the fruits have dried is very simple - when they are shaken, the fruits should thunder loudly enough.
