Many people know about the high nutritional value of peanuts. It is very convenient to take a handful of nuts with you to have a snack on the road and satisfy your hunger. But not everyone knows that this peanut can be successfully grown on your personal plot. For those who are engaged in this, in September it is already time to harvest. And for others who are just planning to place this unusual culture in their garden, the time is right to prepare a plot for future beds

Conditions for growing peanuts and the subtleties of agricultural technology

Regions with warm climates and long summers are more suitable for growing peanuts. The growing season for this Chinese nut is approximately 150-180 days. But even in relatively cool regions, it is possible to harvest, but for this you will have to use film and germinated seed. They also go for such a trick as growing through seedlings and planting in a greenhouse along with tomatoes.

An important condition for growing peanuts is that the soil must be loose. This culture has an interesting feature. Flowering occurs above the soil surface. But after fertilization, the ovary bends to the ground, and then completely hides in the ground. In such conditions, the peanut develops. Therefore, heavy clay soils can become an obstacle to harvesting.

Autumn preparation of the site for sowing peanuts

Peanuts will feel comfortable in a warm garden bed. To arrange such a "bed" for a peanut, a shallow trench is dug in the corner allocated for the beds since autumn - approximately on the bayonet of a shovel. If you overdo it, the plant residues thrown into it may not have time to rotate until the moment of sowing.

When constructing a trench, the top layer of soil is laid on one side, and the bottom layer on the other. The bottom of the trench is covered with plant debris. They are covered with a lower layer of soil. Then the semi-rotten compost is laid. The resulting "feather bed" is covered with the top layer of earth.

If you are going to grow peanuts in a regular garden bed, then you need to stock up on foil to warm up the soil. Sowing is carried out to a depth of about 7-8 cm. And they start planting when the ground at this level warms up to a temperature of + 10 … + 12 ° C.

Spring preparation of the site for sowing peanuts

In addition to the autumn work, the summer resident will also have to take care of his plot in the spring. Namely - to protect your beds from damage to the seed by the bear. For this purpose, baits are used: potato peelings, pieces of root vegetables. They are hidden under plant debris, they can be trampled with manure or humus. And from time to time inspect your baits for the presence of pests.

Peanuts can be planted directly with husked seeds. However, experienced gardeners are advised to sprout nuts. Among other things, after such a procedure, the seeds become unattractive to individual pests.

Well, in a cool climate, it is even better to get seedlings. These works will begin in April. First of all, the seeds are treated with potassium permanganate and hardened by exposure to temperature fluctuations. Only after that is it laid for germination. This process takes about 10 days. When sprouts appear, they start sowing in the soil or for seedlings. The optimal age for planting seedlings in open ground is 25-30 days.

Peanut care

Planting care consists in watering, weeding from weeds and loosening the beds. It is especially important to keep the soil loose during the flowering period, when the ovary begins to lean towards the ground. Then it is also recommended to carry out hilling - the peanut develops at a depth of 7-10 cm.

Harvesting begins when the leaves begin to turn yellow. You can check if the grain separates easily from the shell. If this is the case, do not tighten it, otherwise the seeds will begin to sprout in the beans. The bushes dig in and let the nuts dry in the sun. Collected in piles, the peanuts ripen, and meanwhile the tops give nutrients to the seeds. Threshing is started when the stems are completely dry.
