Amazing bumps of Karex

Do not be confused by the name "Karex". Under it hides the familiar to all Sedge with sharp leaves, easily wounding their offenders. This is an amazing plant that plays a large role in maintaining life on the planet

Rod Karex

The ubiquitous plants of the genus

Karex (Carex), or

Sedge, are multifaceted and have a lot of useful qualities. A characteristic feature of sedges is their ability to form hummocks or tussocks, which can be found in pastures and swamps. They are readily eaten by animals, some species are very decorative, and among the 2000 species there are representatives of the genus and plant-healers.

Linear leaves, simple at first glance, turn out to be amazing creations of nature, if you take a closer look at them. The cutting ability of the leaf is due to the sawtooth microscopic teeth located along its edges, which can only be seen with a magnifying glass. It was these cutting teeth that served as the choice of the name of the genus, since both words contain a meaning, which is expressed by the words: "cut", "cut off", "saw" …

Longitudinal parallel veins, which stand out against the main background in the form of a staff of music, give rise to music, under which the leaves of the plant circle, creating bizarre outlines of a bush-bush, give grace to the leaf.

The Almighty put all his creative fervor into the leaves of the Sedge, forgetting about the flowers, depriving them of their perianths and decorativeness. But the very role of flowers that continue the genus is beautiful without additional external attributes.

Varieties

* White sedge (Carex alba) - likes to settle in swampy damp areas, creating grassy carpets up to 30 cm high from light green leaves.

* Sedge high (Carex elata) - 2-2, 5 times higher than White sedge. The leaves of different varieties are colored differently. The botanical species has light green leaves, and the variety "Golden" is decorated with a yellow border.

* Sedge Bushanana (Carex buchananii) - low bumps (30-40 cm) with flirty leaves, painted in two colors. The top of the leaves is creamy and the bottom is greenish-red.

* Sedge Firm (Carex firma) is a dwarf species that harmoniously fits into the multicolor rock gardens with its intensely green leaves. The ability to tolerate drought is used to strengthen sandy soils, planted on rocky slopes.

* Morrow sedge (Carex morrowii) - likes very wet ground. Variety "Variegated", whose thin leaves are decorated with white stripes, should be covered for the winter. The species is undersized, plant height up to 30 cm.

Growing

Sedges are created by nature for shady and humid places. Only Sedge Firma is drought-resistant.

With rare exceptions (for example, Morrow sedge "Variegated") they tolerate any air temperature.

Sedges love acidic soil (pH from 4.5 to 5.0), slowing down their growth or completely stopping to grow on alkaline soils. When preparing the site for planting sedges, you should add pine needles, rotten foliage without pest larvae, peat or other soil acidifying additives to the soil.

The distances between individual plants are left depending on its type. For undersized, 15 cm is enough, for tall ones it is better to leave 40 cm.

Sedges are also good because they steadfastly keep the defense against pests and diseases, making it easier for the gardener to care for them.

Use in the garden

Sedge is a newfangled plant that saves time and effort of the summer resident. With the right choice of place and neighbors for Sedge, the plant will become a worthy decorative decoration for any shady flower garden.

Any body of water is simply unthinkable without sedge. Borders are arranged from plants, flower beds with usual ornamental plants are "diluted" with single specimens.

Reproduction

They buy plants in the spring to immediately plant them in the place chosen for them.

If there is already a sedge on the site, then it is easy to propagate it by dividing the rhizome.

Can be propagated by sowing seeds.
