In the comments to the article about pruning roses, the question was repeatedly asked: "How to cover roses for the winter?" This question is very timely, because winter is just around the corner, which means it's time to take care of our rose bushes, otherwise they may simply die from the frost.

So let's start with what not to do. Firstly, if you use soil to cover roses, then in no case bury the bush with wet soil! This will lead to damage to the branches and rotting of the roots, in addition, during frost, such a shelter will not protect the rose in any way (due to inexperience, I ruined 2 rose bushes in this way, I was just lucky that I did not have time to cover more). Secondly, never use materials such as straw, sawdust, moss, sand, clean peat, in general, any moisture-absorbing materials for wintering roses. Even if at the time of working with roses such material for shelter is dry, then during the period of autumn rains and winter snowfalls it will be saturated with liquid, but it will not have time to dry out unambiguously. This will lead to rotting of the rose bushes, and not only the roots, but also the branches with buds. Accordingly, the roses will die.

Another point not to do is cover the rose bushes early. In fact, small frosts, like ground frosts, are very easy for roses, and any plant needs to prepare for winter, and these very small frosts are just the impetus, since the leaves on the bushes often begin to crumble after them (revealed by observing the bushes for many years). Therefore, it is better to wait for dry and rather cold weather (2-3 degrees Celsius), or carry out the work on preserving roses in several stages.

By the way, when covering the roses with soil, in any case, do not shovel the earth from under the bushes themselves and around them! This will lead to the fact that the layer of earth above the roots becomes thinner and the probability of freezing out of the root system becomes higher. And for roses, the freezing of the branches is not so terrible as the freezing of the roots for the reason that you can make a strong pruning of the bush and the branches will begin to grow again, but this cannot be done with the roots.

Let's dwell on one more point about what not to do. In case of heavy (and not so) snowfalls, in no case do not shovel snow from your flower bed or rose garden. Some are afraid that the bushes will break under the weight of the snow, someone is worried that after the snow cover melts and a large amount of moisture forms, the roots of rose bushes will begin to rot. Do not worry, a rose is a rather powerful bush, so only weak branches can break off under a layer of snow, which we would have to cut off anyway, and as for moisture, it is quickly absorbed into the soil and leaves either with groundwater or simply evaporates from the surface. land. The exception is soils with a close location of groundwater, but water cannot be planted on them without a previously made drainage system.

In fact, it is snow that best helps rose bushes survive the winter, since the temperature under the snow cover is usually at least three to five degrees below zero. Accordingly, the roots of roses in this case will survive the cold without damage.

And the last thing I would like to draw your attention to, in any case, do not water or water the roses before covering them for the winter! Some beginners find that watering before wintering, especially with fertilization, will help build up strength and nutrients for the winter. In fact, they may receive the nutrients of the rose, but the trunks filled with moisture will freeze at the very first, seemingly mild, frosts, since the liquid turns into ice, as everyone knows, already at a temperature of 0 degrees Celsius. Accordingly, it is easy to imagine what will happen in the branches of rose bushes overflowing with moisture. Leave watering and feeding for the spring, then it will be much more needed by your rose garden.
