Beautiful roses, like many other plants, also need proper preparation for winter, and provide them with a comfortable winter sleep, of course, a reliable shelter. And how well overwintered roses will come out of hibernation largely depends on a competent shelter! Unfortunately, even the most experienced gardeners are not immune from annoying mistakes … What mistakes should be avoided, and which of them are the most common?
Untimely shelter
When preparing roses for wintering, it is very important to do everything on time! Some gardeners seek to "wrap up" beautiful flowers after the very first insignificant negative temperatures, trying to do this as soon as the petals with leaves begin to droop. However, do not underestimate the ability of roses to tolerate frost - these delicate flowers are quite capable of surviving frosts up to minus five, and sometimes even up to minus seven degrees! Moreover, often it even benefits them, allowing them to get a good temper!
There is a very interesting expression among gardeners that roses should be covered "on the ringing ground." Translated into the language of ordinary people, this means that finally the roses need to be insulated only after the soil is frozen to such an extent that when hitting it, the corresponding "ringing" will be clearly heard. However, even in this situation, one should not forget that a measure is needed in everything - you should not drag too long with shelter, that is, leaving the roses uncovered until the arrival of too severe frosts will again be fundamentally wrong!
If you cover the roses too early, then this can be fraught with both damping and completely unnecessary and inappropriate stimulation of vegetation in this situation. If suddenly the frosts are unstable, with a periodic rise in temperatures from minus to zero and even higher, and even more so if the sun peeps out regularly, the roses will gradually begin to release new shoots. These shoots will still not be able to survive the winter, but during their growth they will constantly draw out very impressive amounts of nutrients from the plants. And the damping off of rose twigs under the influence of such temperature "swing" often leads to the death of beautiful plants in the autumn!
Pruning leaves, fruits and flowers
Despite the fact that in many sources such pruning is even recommended, many experienced gardeners note that these actions can significantly reduce the quality of wintering roses. Pruning flowers and fruits will stimulate the highly undesirable process of growing new shoots, so simply cutting off the petals on the flowers will be sufficient. And the foliage of roses usually continues to "work" for the benefit of the root system until the onset of cold weather, respectively, it is not worth cutting off or cutting it either.
Unsuitable cover material
Some gardeners, when hiding roses, quite actively use old buckets (both metal and plastic), as well as unnecessary cardboard boxes. This is by no means worth doing, and there are a number of reasons for that! Metal buckets freeze quickly, and they also heat up very quickly in the event of warming, and quite serious temperature fluctuations are often created inside them. Plastic buckets, on the other hand, are practically airtight, which means that condensation, which brings a lot of harm to plants, will constantly form under them. And cardboard boxes tend to get wet quickly and turn, after freezing, into real ice crypts, completely devoid of air access.
Do not fill up the roses with manure - before the onset of spring, the shoots will definitely turn black. And it is also categorically not recommended to cover plants with small sawdust - due to its impressive hygroscopicity, sawdust often turns into dense ice cocoons around the stems! So it's better to give preference to worthy options for covering material like spunbond and other reliable materials!
Neglecting autumn treatments against various diseases and pests
This point, too, in no case should be discounted. Before proceeding with the shelter of roses, it is recommended to first treat them with fungicides - spraying is carried out both on the ground around the rose bushes, and along the shoots with leaves. The preparations "Previkur", "Topaz", "Hom" or "Skor", as well as solutions prepared on the basis of copper or iron vitriol, are especially well suited for these purposes.
If everything is done correctly and, which is important, on time, then beautiful roses will delight you with their flowering for more than one season! So do not lose sight of such simple, but at the same time very important nuances!
