So, in the last article we talked about what not to do. And in this article, we will finally look at how to properly cover roses for the winter so that they do not freeze.

Before you cover for the winter, do not forget to prune your roses in autumn. In the fall, I do a medium pruning in case that in the spring it is possible to remove the frozen twigs if severe frosts suddenly hit, and the bush does not become cut off at the root. After pruning, we give the bushes a "rest" for a week or two and start covering.

When to cover roses?

Naturally, the day and month depends on the specific region, in the northern part of the country, roses are harvested earlier, in the southern - later. Therefore, we will focus on the air temperature. We start the procedure in dry weather during the period when the air temperature fluctuates between 0 and 3 degrees Celsius. In warmer months, wrapped roses can simply rot and rot due to excess heat and moisture. By the way, in those regions where the temperature does not drop below 3-5 degrees of frost in winter, roses can not be covered, but only made a small, about 15-20 centimeters high, earthen embankment above the roots.

So, we cut the roses in advance, our cuts were “greened up”, the soil dried out, the right weather was set - it's time to get to work. Before covering the roses, be sure to check all the branches so that there are no rotting and sick ones left, if there are any, remove them. Next, take a rake and collect all the grass, leaves and other debris from under the bushes, otherwise various pests will multiply in them.

We proceed to the shelter of roses. The shelter will depend on the weather conditions in your area. If the temperature in winter is kept in the region from zero to minus seven to eight degrees, then it is enough just to make an earthen embankment with a height of 20-25 centimeters above the roots. Roses will not freeze. In the spring, you will need to trim the frozen ends into 2-3 buds and that's it.

If the winters are harsh, then we cover our rose bushes more reliably. The most optimal shelter for any region is considered to be air dry. The essence of this method is very simple: an air gap must be left between the bush and the covering material, since it is this layer that will prevent the bush from freezing and will not allow it to rot in high humidity.

There are several methods of air-dry shelter

First: after adding the rose, we cover it well with spruce branches (it will give a sufficient flow of air) and cover it with something waterproof on top (I took deep wooden boxes, knocked them together old ones that were previously disassembled).

Second method: we take wrapping (wrapping) paper, brown such, carefully wrap the bush with it, leaving an air gap, fasten it with a rope. Cover with cellophane on top. If the deputy is very harsh, cover the bush with spruce branches before wrapping it in paper. This method did not take root for me, the paper is inconveniently wound and removed, but those who are accustomed to it say that it protects well in any frost.

Third method: a frame is made of reinforcement or metal strips, placed over a rose bush, then we spread insulation on top (the same wrapping paper, cardboard, special waterproofing paper), fix it with a rope or twine, cover it with a film on top, which we sprinkle with soil if there are strong winds in the region, then also lay stones or bricks along the bottom so that the film is not demolished.

In addition, for regions where the temperature is mainly kept at the level from minus seven to minus ten degrees and does not fall below 15 degrees, you can sprinkle the roots with an earthen mound 20-25 centimeters high and cover the bushes with spruce branches on top. The preparation of climbing roses, including tea roses, also consists in pruning, removing leaves. Then, on one side, we slightly undermine the bush so that it can be laid on the ground, we add it completely, since climbing roses are less resistant to frost than ordinary ones. Cover the top with spruce branches or make one of the air-dry shelters. Now our roses will definitely survive the winter well and in the summer they will delight us with a long and beautiful flowering.
