Since ancient times, grape crops have been valued in different countries of the world. This plant is also cultivated here. Here grapes have gained popularity since the sixteenth century. Previously, in some snowy winters, the plant successfully preserved its root system under a cover of snow, and in the spring it gave a bountiful high-quality harvest. Over time, Russia began to grow certain grape varieties with certain characteristics, including resistance to frost and low temperatures

Now gardeners are getting good harvest volumes even in the Urals. Nevertheless, grapes still feel best in conditions close to natural growth - good lighting, warm air, reliable shelter from the wind and cold. Temperature changes can adversely affect immature vines and young seedlings. Therefore, vineyards need to be covered for the winter in a special way.

How to prepare a vineyard for wintering?

Experienced gardeners have a variety of grape coverings in their arsenal. These include burlap, spunbond, or wood shelving. In fact, there are many devices suitable for this purpose. The choice of material depends directly on the area of cultivation.

Before creating a shelter for plants for the winter season, the shrubs themselves should be prepared. Otherwise, they can be damaged by rodents or fungal diseases. The complex of preparatory measures includes abundant and thorough watering of the grapes. In early September, the vine needs to be fertilized with potassium-based products or its combination with phosphorus. After the leaves have fallen from the trees and bushes, you can start cutting the vines that did not have time to ripen. You can distinguish it by its green color. In winter, such branches will freeze out anyway. But not only sanitary pruning is carried out at this moment. With the help of a haircut, it is required to form a special load. In addition, grapes need treatment with a three percent solution of vitriol (iron or copper) or other chemicals to protect the plant from pests and diseases.

Particular attention is paid to preparing the aerial parts of the vine bushes for winter shelter. To do this, they are removed from the wire, and the shoots are formed into bundles and tied together. Then it is necessary to proceed to the preparation of trenches, where the vine will be folded. Now you can choose a covering material and disinfect it.

After removing these shelters in the spring, it is required to thoroughly dry them, clean them and treat them with special solutions with antifungal drugs. Until next fall, the fixtures are folded and stored in a dry room. If wood flooring, mats of straw, reeds or roofing material were used as a covering material, then they will need to be treated with copper sulfate (5-7 percent solution) or other preparations. They are then folded neatly under the canopy. Before the autumn shelter of grape bushes, you need to inspect the materials and throw away the damaged, broken, rotten ones.

Winter shelter grapes

There are several types of shelter for grape crops for the winter. Among them - dropping grapes near the boles, semi-covering structures for grapes and complete covering of the vine. In any case, shelter is a must for young seedlings aged one to two years. Hybrids and European varieties require shelter for the winter at any age.

In the southern regions, they begin to harbor grapes in mid-November. After the preparatory procedures and performing the required manipulations, one should proceed to the shelter of the grape roots. The root system of grape shrubs begins to freeze out at a temperature of five to seven degrees of cold. For this reason, with frosts of two to four degrees, a hill of earth should be formed around the trunk. To do this, you need to choose the soil located in the aisles. In this case, the head of the grape bush should be covered well and efficiently. The diameter of the hill should be more than thirty centimeters, and its height should vary within ten to twenty five centimeters (you need to pay attention to the age of the plant and its roots).
