Raspberry shoot burn

Raspberry shoot burn is also called purple stem spot or didimela. It is one of the most destructive and harmful fungal diseases. A massive defeat of raspberry shoots with this disease occurs, as a rule, towards the end of September. Sometimes didimela also attacks gooseberries with blackberries. Often this attack leads to a general weakening of the main ones, as well as to the withering of side shoots with their subsequent death. The yield also decreases markedly

A few words about the disease

On annual raspberry shoots, when affected by this nuisance, the formation of brownish-purple spots of a relatively small size is noted. Mostly they can be seen in the places where the leaves are attached.

Gradually, the size of these rather unpleasant spots increases, and they easily reach two or more centimeters. Then the spots acquire a dark brown tint and are characterized by the middle of light shades, in which, after some time, black and brownish tubercles are formed. And closer to the end of the season, dark brown or purple sores can already be observed on the shoots.

With the onset of the next season, all the spots on the raspberry shoots gradually brighten, and the tubercles that appeared earlier begin to appear more clearly. After a while, they begin to crack, and the bark peels off strongly (this is how the fungus emerges). In winter, diseased shoots become very fragile, brittle and break without much difficulty.

Didimela is caused by a fungus called Leptospaeria coniothyrium. It hibernates almost always on dead or infected shoots. And with the onset of spring, the released spores are spread to young one-year-old raspberry shoots by the wind or with rain spray. Basically, the spread of this harmful fungal disease occurs in the summer period with conidia. Long wet periods favor its development.

How to fight

When growing fragrant raspberries, it is extremely important not to allow thickening of the plantings - it is a serious obstacle to good lighting and airing of berry bushes. Air circulation inside the landings should be as good as possible. Weeds growing in plantations significantly reduce air movement, therefore weed vegetation must be destroyed in a timely manner. To ensure the penetration of sunlight and improve air circulation, it is recommended to plant raspberries in narrow rows, and then systematically thin out the middle of these rows.

Excessive use of fertilizers (and nitrogen-containing ones in particular) should also be avoided, as it helps to enhance the growth of a particularly susceptible to the disease of the succulent mass of plants.

It is best to plant raspberries in open and sunny areas, where all conditions are created for good air flow and excellent drainage. It is recommended to remove the surrounding wild blackberry and raspberry bushes, since they are often the sources of the spread of harmful spores not only of didimela, but also of a number of other equally dangerous diseases.

Bordeaux liquid (300 g is consumed per ten liters of water) and "Nitrafen" help well in the fight against the burn of shoots. As a rule, they are used before the start of bud break. And at the beginning of the growing season, when the shoots grow about fifteen to thirty centimeters, the berry bushes are sprayed with one percent Bordeaux liquid first before flowering, and then as the crop is harvested.

After harvesting, you must also remove and subsequently destroy all two-year old shoots along with infected annuals. It is best to remove them when the plants are in the dormant phase. However, old shoots should be cut and destroyed before spring growth and development of raspberry bushes begins.
