Not only perennials simplify the life of a summer resident. There are many unpretentious annuals that delight the entire summer season with abundant and bright flowering, without requiring much attention to care. Among these annuals there is a lush blooming nemesia, rich in colors. Plant height, varying from 15 to 60 centimeters, allows it to be used in different plantings. It will decorate a front garden and a Moorish lawn, suitable for a rabatka and a separate motley spot on a green lawn carpet
Plant habit
("Habitus", with the stress on the vowel "a", means the appearance or appearance of a plant).
Numerous nemesia flowers that appear in the axils of the leaves of an annual plant have a tubular corolla with two lip-shaped limbs. The lower limb is dicotyledonous, the upper one is four-lobed. It is no coincidence that nemesia flowers resemble snapdragon flowers. They are rather close relatives and belonged to the same family of Norichnikovs. But at the end of the 20th - beginning of the 21st century, as a result of botanists' research, the snapdragon plant was transferred to the plantain family. Indeed, the racemose inflorescence of the snapdragon is more like a plantain inflorescence, while in nemesia the flowers are single, or collected in apical inflorescences.
On erect, branched stems of different heights, leaves are oppositely located, which are of different shapes, serrated or whole.
Black elongated seeds are located in a capsule, remain viable for up to two years.
Varieties
The growing nemesia is annual, but in its homeland, South Africa, it is a perennial plant or shrub.
* Hybrid nemesia - it is more often on sale in the form of a varietal mixture, which is not always convenient, since both the height and color can be very different.
* Goiter nemesia - differs in swollen flowers of irregular shape with a pubescent pharynx. The flowers are large, up to 2.5 centimeters in diameter, collected at the ends of the stems in loose inflorescences. The color can be variegated or monochromatic: pink, yellow, orange, red. Strongly branched bushes reach a height of 30-40 centimeters. Good for a discount bed.
Goiter nemesia has many different varieties that differ in color. For example, the "Fire King" variety has fiery red flowers with an orange throat, while the popular National Ensign variety has two-colored flower corollas: the lower part is white, and the upper part is red.
* Azure nemesia - loves the sun and fresh air, does not like waterlogged soil. Propagated by seeds or stem cuttings. Some varieties of nemesia azure can be bought in nurseries (if there are any in your area) in May, already in bloom. When sowing seeds in spring, flowering begins in July and continues through September.
Erect stems up to 40 centimeters high under the weight of blue, blue, pink or almost white inflorescences gradually begin to tilt towards the ground.
* Lush nemesia - its flowers are smaller than other species, and very delicate. It resembles wildflowers. It is undeservedly rare in our country.
* Multicolored nemesia - resembles goiter nemesia, but differs in smaller flowers bearing a spur-spur behind. The plant is undersized, up to 25 centimeters high. more common with bright blue or light blue flowers.
Growing
Nemesia is a very unpretentious plant, cold-resistant, light-loving.
Although it comes from Africa and loves warmth, the plant does not tolerate the hot sun. Therefore, a well-ventilated place is better suited for him. If you are growing nemesia in pots or containers, make sure that the soil in them does not dry out, otherwise the nemesia will die. Outdoors in dry weather it needs watering.
Nemesia prefers soil that is moderately fertile, light, without lime, and moist. Enough two mineral dressings per season.
To make the plant bush better, pinch the top. Withered flowers are removed.
For longer flowering, seeds are sown in February-March. after picking, it is advisable to plant in such a way as not to damage the roots when transplanting into the soil, that is, using peat tablets or cups. Can be sown directly into the ground in the month of May. Seedlings of nemesia arrive in stores in May.
