In October, you will have to take care of such a perennial as asparagus. To put things in order in the beds where this valuable dietary plant grows, dying shoots are cut off. The gardener's asparagus nursery is also waiting for work - here the plants need to be protected from the approaching frost. And those who are just going to make room for this extraordinary shrub need to apply the necessary fertilizers to the beds

Autumn care for asparagus planting

When preparing for winter asparagus, you need to inspect the plant for the presence of diseases and pests on it. The plant can be parasitized by asparagus fly, rust. These ailments affect the asparagus tops. If they are present, the shoots are cut right at the ground, and then these infected areas are destroyed - they must be burned. The asparagus rhizome remains overwintered in the open field. When your pet is healthy, you can leave the drying tops for the winter - this will slightly help protect the roots from freezing. If the tops are cut off, the underground part of the plants remaining in the soil is additionally hidden under a thick layer of humus - at least 8 cm.

Asparagus growing in the nursery with the early arrival of hard frosts, it is necessary to arrange a shelter. To do this, it is thrown with fallen leaves, straw, you can use straw manure.

The beds where asparagus is grown and bears fruit for more than a year must be fed. To do this, apply:

• superphosphate - 0.3 kg;

• 40% potassium salt - 0.25 kg.

This amount of fertilizer will be needed for 10 square meters. area. Trace elements are scattered over the site and embedded in the soil by loosening the row spacings. This procedure must be done very carefully so as not to damage the delicate asparagus sprouts and other parts of the root system. We must not forget that the roots of the perennial are located dangerously close to the soil surface, and wintering buds are already beginning to form here, which it is advisable not to injure.

Site preparation for spring planting

Already, the gardener needs to decide where he will grow asparagus next year. To do this, you need to take into account the preferences of the plant. Asparagus likes light, loose soil, fertilized with humus. Where the earth has an acidic reaction, liming should be carried out. The layer of fertile soil should be at least 25 cm deep. The peculiarity of asparagus is that it will need to be hidden in the ground. Young shoots are harmed by the abundance of sunlight. This makes the delicate delicacy coarse, and an unpleasant bitter aftertaste appears. Autumn preparation of the site includes incorporating manure into the soil, adding superphosphate and potassium salt. For 1 sq. approximately 10 kg of organic matter will be required.

Features of the reproduction of asparagus

Asparagus is propagated through seedlings. It must be borne in mind that the seeds of the plant germinate rather slowly. This process can take from 2 weeks to a month or more. However, one should not rush to sowing either, since young shoots are very sensitive to frequent spring cold snaps.

To make the germination result more successful, do not be lazy to soak the seeds before sowing. Sowing is carried out to a depth of 5 cm at a distance of about 4 cm from each other, the row spacing is left at 15 cm. Care consists in watering, feeding and thinning. The development of seedlings is promoted by slurry irrigation. Feeding consumption for 10 plants is approximately 10 liters.

When the time comes to move the seedling rhizomes to the beds, they are taken out of the ground with a pitchfork. This method will protect the kidneys hidden from the eyes from damage. Well-developed large specimens are moved to the ridges, on which there are at least 3 buds.
