Inexperienced gardeners often make mistakes in caring for strawberries, not knowing how to deal with the new mustache constantly appearing on the outlets. What to do when they creep out of the area allocated for planting strawberries? Leave them on the plantation or remove them from the sockets without regret? Or maybe there are ways to find a use for them?

Seedling and age of the mother bush

It should be remembered that the propagation of strawberries in the garden by the seed method is extremely difficult: the plants sprout unevenly, and the quality of the harvest often fails. And therefore, it is better to use vegetative methods for these purposes. Namely, reproduction by seedlings, which is obtained from rooted outlets from the plant mustache.

In this case, the gardener must take into account the age of the plant. High-quality planting material can be obtained from plants, from the moment of planting no more than two years have passed. In general, an annual plant is capable of producing about 25-30 new outlets per season. The mother bush, which is already two years old, increases its productivity many times over - up to 70 outlets.

As soon as a new rosette is formed, it is separated from the mother bush and moved for rooting in more suitable conditions for this - a nursery. Moreover, the earlier the seedlings are moved, the stronger and healthier the outlet will be.

Planting material in one season

You can take care of future seedlings in advance if you plant a small number of outlets in early spring under a film shelter. With this method of reproduction, ready-made planting material can be expected to be obtained by the first decade of June.

There are techniques that help increase the productivity of uterine bushes, as well as increase the rate at which new outlets appear on seedlings. For this, pre-planting mulching of the beds with opaque materials is used. This trick will shorten the whisker formation time by about two weeks, and will also double the number of seedlings. In addition, whisker formation can be enhanced by removing peduncles.

Strawberries are a big lover of a humid microclimate. This feature is also used to obtain planting material. To do this, a bunch of mustache is hidden in a tied plastic bag with a small amount of water. high humidity and heat will quickly do the trick. You can also cover young plantings with cut plastic bottles.

How to compensate for the lack of seedlings at the expense of a mustache on a plantation

With sparse landings, the mustache can be shifted to arrange them in rows. Also, the property of strawberries to quickly release a mustache can help out when there is an opportunity to allocate an impressive area for strawberries, but there is not enough planting material for a large plantation. To do this, the seedlings are placed in a row at a distance of no closer than half a meter to each other. Spring or early summer are good times for this job.

The plantings must be closely monitored so as not to miss the moment when such a rosette appears on the mustache, which can be rooted in the rows between plantings. However, it is not separated from the mother plant. The mustache is laid out along the row, and the bottom of the horn is crushed to the young plant with earth. It is not forbidden to place two young plants in one well.

Filling in this way the free space between spring plantings, by the fall, an admissible distance of 15-20 cm will be maintained between the strawberry outlets in the beds.

When strawberries have already been planted in August, and there is no shortage of planting material, the mustaches that crawl beyond the boundaries of the rows are removed. It is also recommended to remove the mustache on old plantations. They are not only of little use for seedlings, but also deplete plants. Removing them as early as possible will have a positive effect on the amount of the crop.
