Planting garlic in the fall: important nuances

If you have a piece of land, but there are no plans for it yet, use it profitably - plant garlic! This culture takes up little space, but it is valued almost worth its weight in gold. What is needed in order for the planting of winter garlic to be successful?

Conditions for harvesting large garlic

Growing winter garlic is very beneficial. It is more productive than the spring one. In addition, his teeth are larger. But in order for them to fully reveal their potential, you need to take into account some of the nuances:

• it is not recommended to grow garlic in the same place every year;

• it is also not advised to plant cloves after onions;

• in a shady corner of the garden, garlic develops well greens, but the quality of the heads suffers;

• you should not lay the garlic for germination, so that the roots are not damaged during planting, especially when planting is carried out by the usual pressing of a clove into the soil. Instead, it is best to soak it in a fungicide solution before planting;

• if you press the garlic into the ground, the planting may turn out to be too shallow and the garlic will suffer from a lack of moisture, and in a snowless frosty winter - from freezing of the roots. Therefore, it is better not to be lazy and use a peg to form holes;

• for planting, you need to select only the best, largest teeth, and those that are smaller should be used for food or for conservation;

• no need to be greedy and save on space by planting garlic too close to each other - this results in smaller heads. In addition, it is necessary to carry out planting with aisles. In a row, a distance of 10-15 cm is left between the holes, and the row spacing is about 25 cm. Such a distance will facilitate the care of the beds in the future.

The subtleties of planting garlic before winter

They start planting garlic at different times, depending on the climatic conditions of the region. Usually this is done in October, but in some latitudes such work is carried out in September and even in August. However, you should not rush so that the garlic does not sprout ahead of time. He will not die, but his yield will be worse than it could have been if his gardener was planted at the optimal time. But it is also not recommended to be late, so that the teeth have time to take root before the arrival of frost. Here you also need to make an allowance for the variety, for which region it is intended.

Planting depth matters a lot. When a peg is used to make holes, the planting level can be marked on it. Based on the type of soil, the cloves are placed at a depth of 5-7 cm. On light soils, planting is done deeper.

Despite the fact that garlic is not laid for germination, individual cloves can still begin to release roots. And this is another reason why it is better to use a planting peg. Having carefully planted the garlic in the hole, these rudiments of the root system will not be damaged, and the planting material will root better.

Before planting, the beds can be filled with phosphorus and potash fertilizers. As for nitrogen dressings, they are used in the spring, when the garlic grows. In addition, together with watering, it is recommended to spray greens with a solution of fungicides. Better to use biologicals.

Improvement of planting material

Despite the prevention, even the best and most resistant variety degenerates over time, the heads accumulate diseases in themselves. To improve your harvest, you can use bulbs, not teeth, for reproduction. Most infections penetrate into the garlic through the "roots", and the "tops" remain healthy. Therefore, next to the planting of the cloves, one row can be set aside for sowing the bulbs. They are planted closer to each other and at a shallower depth than usual. The next year, they will give a harvest of one-toothed. This will be an excellent healthy planting material for further propagation of garlic and obtaining high-quality heads.
