Oleander - This evergreen shrub belongs to the shrub family
About oleander
The homeland of this plant is the subtropics, ranging from Morocco and Portugal, ending with southern China. In the natural world, this plant is often found near the bed of drying up rivers. For example, in Ukraine, oleander can be found in the Crimea. Oleander is also common in the Black Sea in the Caucasus.
The plant has branching stems of a brownish color, which are covered with rounded lenticels. The flowering of this plant occurs in the summer. Flowers appear bright, large, they are located in corymbose inflorescences. However, today there are a fairly large number of oleander species, in which flowers of various shapes, for example, they may have double petals. Parts of this plant are poisonous and long-term inhalation of oleander aromas can cause quite severe headaches.
Features of oleander care
The plant should be provided with a bright and sunny place where fresh air is constantly supplied. For this purpose, southern windows are ideal. If you choose northern windows, then the plant often sheds its leaves due to the lack of the necessary degree of lighting.
In summer, it is recommended to place the oleander outdoors: for example, on the balcony. The plant should be protected from precipitation. In winter, the same bright lighting should be kept. Therefore, you can add light from the lamps, which must be turned on for at least eight hours every day. The room must be constantly ventilated, but at the same time, drafts must be avoided.
In spring and summer, this plant should not be sprayed, but in especially hot weather it will be useful to place the pot in a special tray filled with pebbles or wet expanded clay. In winter, when the heating system is constantly running, the plant should be regularly sprayed with water at room temperature. If the air is too dry, the tips of the leaves can dry out.
In spring and summer, oleander needs constant and intensive watering: next time the plant needs to be watered immediately after the top layer has dried. In case of particularly hot temperatures, you can leave water in the pan itself. For irrigation, use warm water, which has already settled. In the rest of the time, the plant requires moderate watering: about two to three days after the top layer has time to dry.
The intensive growth of the plant occurs from April to August, at which time the plant must be fertilized with special complex mixtures intended for indoor plants. Organic fertilizers are also good for oleander. Fertilize the plant thirty minutes after watering on cool days.
As for the soil, the oleander needs a mixture of turf, leaf, humus, peat, sand and horn shavings.
When the roots are entwined with an earthen ball, then the oleander should be transplanted. The best time for such work will be the end of May or the beginning of June. Old roots must be shortened, and the earthen lump must be reduced. All this will lead to the fact that the oleander will bloom much better. If the plant has grown to an impressive size, then you can perform a transshipment or simply replace the upper part of the soil, and sprinkle the cuts of the roots with crushed charcoal.
After flowering, the oleander must be trimmed, the branches must be cut in half or slightly more. The flowers of this plant appear at the ends of annual shoots, which grow quite quickly after such pruning. If the plant does not bloom, then it is likely that the reason lies precisely in the wrong pruning. Although the reason for this phenomenon can be a lack of food or moisture, and a lack of illumination.
The plant propagates by seeds, air layers and cuttings. The seeds should be planted shortly after ripening, otherwise they will not grow. Before planting seeds in the ground, you need to soak them for about half an hour. For this purpose, a solution of potassium permanganate or a systemic fungicide is suitable.
